Kerwood Named CAA Pitcher of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. - University of Delaware's Billie Kerwood was named CAA Pitcher of the Week after leading Delaware to four wins, as announced by the conference on March 18.Â
Kerwood was the winning pitcher in all four games for Delaware, as she pitched 22.1 innings and allowed just one run, eight hits, nine walks, a .108 BAA, and 35 strikeouts. Kerwood began the week with a seven inning outing against Saint Joseph's and allowed just one hit and one walk with 12 strikeouts on March 12. She then pitched a complete game against Stony Brook while allowing just two hits, one run, and struck out eight to begin the weekend series. The next day, Kerwood came on in relief and pitched 3.1 innings and allowed one hit, zero runs, and struckout four. She then ended the weekend with five shutout relief innings and struckout 11 while giving up just four hits and a walk.Â
Kerwood became the first pitcher since Jordan Cargile in May 2018 to be the winning pitcher in four-straight Delaware wins, and has won five games in a row dating back to last week. She pitched the fifth most innings in all of Division I, and had the lowest ERA among all pitchers that threw at least 15 innings. She was tied for the NCAA lead with Allie Floyd of Louisiana Tech with four victories, ranked second among pitchers with 2.51 hits per seven innings, and was tied for second in strikeouts.Â
This is Kerwood's second CAA Pitcher of the Week award this season and of her career, as she previously earned the recognition during the opening week of the season. She has been the winning pitcher in Delaware's last five wins and in seven of the Blue Hens 10 wins during its win streak. Kerwood leads the CAA with 10 wins, 84 innings pitched and 104 strikeouts and is top three in complete games and batting average against.Â
Delaware has earned a CAA Weekly Honor in every week it has played in, and has had five players honored so far this season (Sydney Shaffer and Kerwood - Feb. 11, Gianna Costaro - Feb. 25, Josie Crossman - March 4, Morgan Hess - March 11). Their five honors are most in the conference. Its six honors are two more than any other team.Â
The Blue Hens play a doubleheader today against Rider starting at 2:00. UD is currently on a 10 game win streak, one of eight teams that have won 10 games in a row. Delaware will return to CAA play this weekend on the road against Hofstra.Â
