NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware and Head Men's Soccer Coach Tommy McMenemy have agreed upon a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the men's soccer program through the 2030 season, Director of Athletics & Campus Recreation Jordan Skolnick announced on Wednesday.
"Tommy represents a rare combination of being a phenomenal leader, excellent soccer tactician, and someone who cares deeply about the student-athlete experience," Skolnick said. "After a record breaking 2025 season, he's created a real team identity and positioned our men's soccer program incredibly well for future success. I'm thrilled to continue to watch how the program grows under his leadership."
McMenemy was named the 12th head coach in program history in November of 2021 and has led the team to increased success in each of his four seasons. Under his leadership, the Fightin' Blue Hens were ranked as high as No. 24 in the TopDrawer Soccer Top 25 Weekly Poll and received votes on three occasions in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Weekly Poll during the 2025 season, marking the first time for either accomplishment since 2016.
"I would like to thank Jordan Skolnick and President Carlson for extending the opportunity to lead this amazing program for another five years," McMenemy said. "We are building a special soccer environment here at UD, and it's all thanks to the extraordinary commitment of our student-athletes and the dedication of the best coaching staff in the business. My family and I couldn't be happier to continue building our lives here in Delaware, and we're excited for what the future holds!"
UD has also appeared in two conference tournaments, had a pair of conference players of the year, 15 all-conference honorees, two TopDrawerSoccer Best XI Freshman, and eight players in TopDrawerSoccer's Top 100 rankings over his four years in Newark.
McMenemy led Delaware to a historic and record-breaking 2025 campaign in the program's 100th season and its first year competing in The Summit League. The Blue Hens posted a 12-2-3 overall record and advanced to The Summit League Semifinals, finishing with the fewest losses (2) in program history among seasons with at least 15 matches. Delaware opened the year with the best start in program history (7-0), went unbeaten in its first 10 matches (9-0-1), and finished the season undefeated at home (8-0).
Under McMenemy's tutelage, Delaware broke 16 program records in 2025 and emerged as the top attacking team in the nation, finishing first nationally in scoring offense (2.82 goals per game) and points per game (8.53), while ranking second in goal differential (+37). Delaware led The Summit League in 17 team statistical categories and 15 individual categories. Individually, junior Rich Monath was named The Summit League Midfielder of the Year, while the Blue Hens produced seven All-Summit League selections, four All-ECAC honorees, and six CSC Academic All-District recipients.
Prior to coming to Newark, McMenemy spent 10 seasons with the University of Michigan Wolverines, six as an assistant coach and four as the associate head coach. He recruited seven top-20 ranked recruiting classes within nine years and coordinated and executed all aspects of domestic and international scouting and recruitment. He handled all facets of coaching, organizing team training sessions, and led the attacking unit tactics for the Wolverines.
