NEWARK, Del. – After trailing by as many as five runs in the top of the third inning, the University of Delaware baseball program pulled off a comeback victory by a score of 9-8 in the opening game of a Conference USA weekend series against FIU on Friday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved its overall record to 15-31 overall and 3-19 in CUSA play.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Sal Mineo led the way for the Blue Hens offensively. He went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base. Evan Bouldin (2-for-5, 3 RBI) and Matthew Minckler (2-for-4) also had multiple hits.
- Andrew Callaway started on the mound. He pitched in 2.2 innings, allowed five runs (two earned) off three hits and struck out four batters.
- Nick Bilotto pitched the following 3.2 innings. He allowed just one earned run off two hits and struck out one batter. He earned the win and is now 1-2.
- Ryan McLaughlin pitched the final 2.2 innings and earned the save, his third of the season. He allowed two earned runs off four hits and struck out two batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- FIU opened the game with a 5-0 lead. The Panthers hit a three-run home run in the top of the second, followed by a two-run double in the following inning.
- After the Panthers took a 6-1 lead, the Blue Hens tied the game with a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Mineo hit a single to the first baseman that nearly went foul down the first base line and scored LT Cockrill. The next at-bat, a Sam Winsett walked with the bases loaded. Harry Carr scored in the process
- The following at-bat, Evan Bouldin hit into a fielder's choice to third base with the bases loaded. The third baseman stepped on the third base bag and overthrew the throw at first base. Winsett scored on the fielder's choice from third base, while Minckler sprinted from first base to score, and Bouldin advanced to third. The rally finished with an Anthony DeCesare RBI single.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jeremy Wolf hit a no doubt two-run home run to right field to give Delaware an 8-6 lead.
- Noah Burroughs drove in an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-6. The insurance run proved to be crucial as the Panthers had two runs in the ninth inning, not enough to mount a comeback.
