Track & Field Announced the Hiring of Montel Johnson

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware track & field team has added Montel Johnson to its coaching staff as an assistant coach, as announced by head coach Josh Hayman on July 20. Johnson, who will take charge of the throws program, will officially assume the role on July 31.Â
We are proud to welcome Montel to Delaware to lead our throws program, Hayman said. His accomplishments as both a student-athlete and coach, combined with his strong understanding of the mid-atlantic recruiting landscape, make him an outstanding fit for the vision of our program. Montel's technical expertise, passion for developing student-athletes, and commitment to excellence will have an immediate impact on our team and culture. We are excited for the energy and leadership he will bring to our Fightin' Blue Hens and look forward to seeing our throws program reach new heights under his guidance.
Johnson's most recent stop was at Penn where he was a volunteer assistant coach. During his two seasons at Penn, the Quakers had tremendous success with the throws team, including two NCAA first team All-American honors and an NCAA Honorable Mention All-American. The throws team contributed 145 points throughout the 2025 and 2026 indoor and outdoor Ivy League Championships. The Quakers had 19 individual scorers at the Ivy League championships, including five individual champions between the women's shot put, women's discus and men's javelin. Overall, the program earned 25 new top-10 all-time marks under Johnson's tutelage.
Outside of Penn, he was a private throws coach and worked with athletes in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York area. He developed relationships with Olympic coaches and athletes through digital and in-person consultations. Through his private coaching, he helped high school athletes earn roster spots at Princeton, Army, Rutgers, and Boston University.Â
The Gibbstown, New Jersey native graduated from Monmouth in 2021 where he competed in the discus throw, hammer throw and javelin throw. In his senior season, he was crowned the MAAC Champion in the discus throw with a mark of 57.30 meters.Â
