Sturtevant, Matey, and Buono Named Women’s Lacrosse Team Captains

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's lacrosse team has named its captains for the upcoming year, head coach Amy Altig announced. The trio of Riley Sturtevant, Mary Matey and Grayson Buono will lead the Fightin' Blue Hens as first-year captains.
Sturtevant returns to Newark for a fifth season after appearing in all 18 games in 2026 with 11 starts. She tied for fourth on the team with 22 goals, scoring in 16 of UD's 18 games, while also adding 18 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. The Springfield, Virginia native had seven multi-point performances including a five-point (3g, 2a) effort at Lindenwood. Sturtevant has played in 42 career games for the Blue Hens, registering 37 goals and nine assists to go along with 31 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers.
Matey had a breakout junior season in 2026, playing in all 18 games with 17 starts and finishing with 24 ground balls, eight caused turnovers, and 37 draw controls. The Phoenixville, Pennsylvania native scooped up a season-high five ground balls in the ASUN semifinals against Lindenwood and had three separate games with five draw controls. Matey helped anchor Delaware's stout defense that led the ASUN and ranked 14th nationally in scoring defense (8.5 goals/game) and held 11 opponents under the 10-goal threshold.
Buono appeared in 17 games as a sophomore, finishing with 17 points on eight goals and nine assists while also contributing six ground balls, six caused turnovers, and nine draw controls. She had five multi-point games highlighted by a five-goal performance at Lindenwood to open ASUN play. The Wayne, Pennsylvania native has appeared in 30 games for the Blue & Gold in her first two years.
The Blue Hens will start preparations for the 2027 season as the squad begins fall workouts next week. Delaware wrapped up a historic 2026 season with a 13-5 overall record, the program's most wins with 1999. In its first season in the ASUN, UD went 8-0 in conference play to win its first regular season championship since 1999 and mark the fifth time that the program has finished undefeated in conference. Delaware defeated Lindenwood in the ASUN semifinals for the program's first conference tournament victory since 2009. The Blue Hens took home four conference major awards including ASUN Offensive Player of the Year (Ella Rishko), ASUN Defensive Player of the Year (Kennedy Radziul), ASUN Midfielder of the Year (Gore), and ASUN Coach of the Year (Altig), and had six all-conference selections.
