NEWARK, Del. – Behind big days from WR Sean Wilson and the defense, the University of Delaware football team downed the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 22-14 on Saturday afternoon in Delaware Stadium to win the inaugural Cockfight in the Tub. The Fightin' Blue Hens moved to 2-1, while the Chanticleers fell to 1-2.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- UD outpaced the Chants in total offense (395-385) and won the time of possession (32:08-27:52).
- Delaware's defense recorded a season-high four sacks and six TFLs, while recording a second-half shutout. It was the first-scoreless half by the defense against an FBS team since the Blue & Gold held Navy to zero points in the first half of Ryan Carty's first-career win on September 3, 2022.
- Wilson tied his career high with nine receptions for a career-best 185 receiving yards to go with a pair of long receiving touchdowns. His 185 receiving yards mark the 10th-most receiving yards by a Blue Hen in a single game. It was Wilson's fourth-career 100-yard receiving game, second-career 150-yard receiving game, and third-career two touchdown game.
- QB Nick Minicucci completed 24-of-32 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. It was the senior signalcaller's ninth-career 300-yard passing game.
- LB Colin Gallagher led the team with eight tackles, one shy of his career best, which he set last week at Vanderbilt. He also forced a fumble and recovered another.
- BAN Blake Matthews tied his career highs in TFLs (1.5) and sacks (1.0), while adding six tackles, two QB hurries, and a forced fumble.
- DE Noah Matthews matched his career bests with 1.5 sacks and 1.5 TFLs to go with five tackles.
- CB Jamarion Kolagbodi tallied a career-high three pass breakups to go with five tackles.
- P Josh Cupitt had a day, landing 4-of-6 punts inside the 20 and had a long punt of 52 yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coastal Carolina struck first on a 62-yard pass that found the endzone to go up 7-0 halfway through the first.
- Shortly into the second quarter, with a pair of pitches and back into the hands of Minicucci, the QB heaved a 40-yard pass for Wilson to make a Moss-like catch over a pair of Coastal defenders in the endzone to tie the game at 7-7.
- The Chanticleers answered back with a 27-yard touchdown pass to regain a seven-point advantage.
- UD jumped back in front right before the end of the half as RB Jo Silver took a direct snap into the endzone up the middle from two-yards out, followed by a Minicucci run for a successful two-point conversion to go up 15-14 at the break.
- The Hens and Chants traded empty possessions in the third quarter.
- The Minicucci-Wilson connection reached paydirt again, this time from 36-yards out, to increase the Delaware lead to 22-14 with 8:19 to play in regulation.
- After Coastal Carolina was threatening deep in UD territory, S AJ Graham came up with a fourth-down pass breakup in the endzone with 4:07 remaining to halt the threat.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware moves to 30-3 under Carty when leading at half, 25-0 when winning the turnover margin, and 13-0 when having no offensive turnovers.
- Minicucci's two touchdown passes moves him to 43 for his career, putting him at fifth in program history in career TD passes.
- Minicucci's 24 completions gives him sole possession of fourth in program history for career completions, passing Matt Nagy.
