Known as one of the most energetic and talented young coaching minds in college baseball, Juan Pimentel joined the Blue Hen baseball coaching staff in July 2018 and begins year three as Delaware's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.Â
Â
"We're really excited to have Juan join our staff. He brings great knowledge, energy, a cutting edge approach to pitching and great recruiting contacts. This is an exciting time for UD baseball and Juan's addition adds to that excitement," Sherman said. "Juan already is recognized as a tireless worker and an outstanding young talented pitching coach. We feel very fortunate to have Juan join our staff and lead our staff onto great things."
Â
The former UCF hurler spent the 2018 season as the pitching coach at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla. He created a developmental platform for the pitching staff, which resulted in an eight-win improvement, four Division I commitments and three MLB draft picks.Â
Â
"I'm very grateful and excited about the opportunity to lead and develop our pitching staff. I look forward to building new relationships and to be a part of the growth of our program," Pimentel said. "I'm thrilled to be able to join a talented and experience coaching staff as we continue to develop Blue Hen student-athletes."
Â
Following his first season in the First State, Pimentel saw south-paw Brandon Walter get selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 2019 MLB Draft. Walter was a workhorse for the Blue Hens, compiling 230.0 innings on the bump in his career with a 3.68 ERA while racking up 252 strikeouts, good enough for third all-time in UD history upon his graduation. Walter returned in 2019 from Tommy John surgery and became just the fourth player in program history to strikeout 100-plus batters in a single season with 106 punchouts. The accolades for the staff continued as freshman Joey Silan was selected to the All-CAA Rookie Team as a starting pitcher.
In the shortened season of 2020, due to COVID-19, the year ultimately ended on a high note with the pro signing of Billy Sullivan IV to the Philadelphia Phillies organizations, his childhood team. Pimentel also maneuvered his pitching staff that saw freshman Bryce Greenly earn freshman All-American honors. Greenly was 1-0 in four appearances with a 0.96 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 9.1 innings pitched. Pimentel also made the move of junior Chris Ludman from his starting role to the bullpen that resulted in his ERA dropping from 14.04 to 0.00 in his next 10.1 innings.Â
As a student-athlete, Pimentel spent two seasons at UCF, making 32 appearances, 24 of which were starts. He was a member of the program's leadership council and was a part of the 2017 American Athletic Conference Regular Season championship team.Â
Â
Prior to UCF, he was a two-time All-Conference performer at Indian River State College.
