The 2019-20 CAA Women's Swimming Coach of the Year and 2022-2023 CAA Men's Swimming Co-Coach of the Year, Pablo Marmolejo begins his seventh season as the University of Delaware swimming & diving head coach for the 2023-24 season.
Marmolejo, a former Delaware assistant and Mexican National Team member, was an assistant at UD from 2012-2015 before taking over as the head coach and program director at the Delaware Swim Team, an elite club that earned national recognition over the past three years.
“We are extremely excited about Pablo’s vision for our Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving program, as well as his ability to develop swimmers and divers and passion for recruiting,” Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak said. “He has an excellent network that will serve us well in attracting talented student-athletes to the University of Delaware.”
In 2024, Marmolejo continued the success from the previous few seasons as both the men’s and women’s team again went undefeated. Both teams boasted a dual meet record of 4-0. The women’s team finished in second for the first time since 2001, and the second time since joining the CAA. The Blue Hens earned five goal medals, and 14 top three finishes in the process. Newcomers Lauren Hartel and Victoria Novinskiy made an immediate impact on the team as Hartel won the 500 free and Novinskiy won the 200 back. For the third straight season, the men’s team finished in second place with five individual gold medals, and 19 total top three finishes. Leading the way was transfer Kaloyan Levterov, who placed first in the 200 freestyle and 200 back, breaking the all time record in the 200 back in the CAA in the process. In addition, the men’s 200 freestyle relay team broke their own CAA record. Delaware was selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for the Fall of 2023 and the Spring of 2024.
In 2023, Marmolejo spearheaded a historic season for the men and women, as the men went 9-0 in dual meets and the women went 9-0-1 in dual meets. It was the first time the men were undefeated in dual meets in program history, and the third time in women's history they were without a loss in dual meets in a season. The men once again finished in second place in the CAA Championships, equaling their best finish ever. Mira Selling won her second straight CAA Swimmer of the Meet, as the women finished in fourth place overall. Over the course of the season, the men set 16 program records, while the women set 12. The men and women both received All-Conference honors in nine events, with the women winning conference titles in the 200 IM, 200 free, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, and 1-meter dive. The men won titles in the 200 back, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay. Delaware also set the all-time CAA and CAA Championship Meet Record in the men's 200 back, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay and women's 400 free relay. Delaware was selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for the Fall 2022 semester and landed seven on the CSC 2023 Academic All-District Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams.
In 2022, Marmolejo coached the men's team to a second-place CAA finish, their highest in program history, and the women's team to a top-five finish. Mira Selling was the 2022 CAA Championship Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet honors after taking gold in the 200 IM, 200 Free, and 200 Fly. Delaware broke 10 school records, 10 freshmen records, and recorded 51 top-10 times, two diving zone qualifiers, five NCAA B-Cuts, and 19 CAA podium finishes. The men's and women's swimming & diving teams were successful in the classroom too, as both programs were selected by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a Scholar All-America Team for the Spring 2022 semester.
In 2021, he guided the women's team to four CAA individual champions. Sophomore Mira Selling earned gold medals in the 200 Free and 200 Fly while senior Audrey Duvall earned gold in the 200 IM and 400 IM. On the men's side he also saw Bryce Ciecko earn first place in the 500 Free.
In 2020, Marmolejo was named the CAA Women's Swimming Coach of the Year after guiding the Blue Hens to a fifth-place finish at the CAA Championship, their highest since 2016. Freshman Mira Selling earned three medals at the championships and was named the conference's Rookie of the Year, the program's first. He also helped guide senior Kevin Basch to a pair of silver medals, helping solidify Basch as one of the best swimmers in program history.
In the three years prior to getting the head job at UD, Marmolejo has managed daily operations of the 350-member Delaware Swim Team, which earned Top-35 national rankings by the USA Swimming’s Club of Excellence Rating program three times. During his time as the head coach and program director, he coached swimmers to the USA National Junior Team, the USA Olympic Trials and the World Championship Trials.
Thirteen of his swimmers qualified to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-Americans, while he coached the DIAA Swimmers of the year twice and the PIAA Female Swimmer of the Meet twice.
“I’m excited and humbled by the opportunity to be back at UD. I want to thank Chrissi, Jenn Judy and Bob Lopez for trusting that I am the right person for the job. The opportunity to lead this program is a privilege and an honor. I’m excited to work with our student-athletes to help them achieve their academic and athletic goals to bring the success that is expected from this program.”
This will be Marmolejo’s second stint with the Blue Hens as he served as an assistant and the recruiting director for three seasons (2012-2015). During his time, he coached the sprint and middle distance groups that led to 13 individual program records and one conference record.
His start in coaching came at his alma mater, West Virginia, where he served as a graduate assistant from 2009-2011.
Marmolejo’s experience as a swimmer is just as impressive as his coaching accolades.
During his time at WVU, he was a three-time Big East Conference Champion in the 200 butterfly, earning NCAA All-America status in 2006 and 2007. He was also an 11-year member of the Mexican National Team, where he was the national record holder in the 200 butterfly and represented Mexico in the FINA World Championships, the Pan American Games, the FISU World University Games, the Central American Games and the Central American Championships.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management from WVU in 2009 and his Master’s Degree in Public Administration in 2011 from WVU.
Marmolejo and his wife, Kelyn, have two sons, Diego and Mateo, and reside in New Castle County.
