Karen Freed was named the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Sport Administration and Recreation in July of 2021 after joining the University of Delaware in October of 2017 as the Associate Athletics Director/Director of Recreation.Â
Â
With an emphasis on the overall student-athlete experience, Freed oversees all aspects of the Sport Administration Team. Her work focuses on ensuring shared and sustainable visions, plans and standards pertaining to all sport programs and coach expectations. In addition, Freed is the sport administrator for baseball, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving and serves on the department’s leadership team.

Freed also oversees a vibrant UD Recreation program that services the entire student body and focuses on student wellness, leadership development, and healthy engagement. Among its features are the Carpenter Sports Building, four fitness centers, 38 club sport teams, and over 30 intramural leagues and tournaments.

Before arriving at Delaware, Freed spent four years as assistant director of athletics and recreation services and senior women administrator at Rutgers University-Camden.

Prior to Rutgers-Camden, she was the director of athletics and student leadership at Salem (N.J.) Community College from 2009-13 and spent four years at NCAA Division II Molloy (N.Y.) College where she served as both assistant and associate director of athletics, was interim director of athletics for one season, and was the senior women administrator in 2003-07.

Freed, a native of Pennsville, N.J., earned her undergraduate degree in sports communications (2001) and her master’s degree in sports administration (2002) from Mississippi State. While at MSU she served as an athletic marketing graduate assistant for one season.

She has served on numerous athletics committees during her tenure and is a member of Women Leaders in College Sports and the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Leaders in Collegiate Recreation.

Freed and her husband, Mark, are parents to son, Landon, and daughter, Adley.
