Matthew Lee Owyang has been named assistant coach of University of Delaware's rowing program, as announced by head coach Asiya Mahmud.
"We are excited to have Matt on staff," Mahmud said. "He has extensive knowledge when it comes to training programs, equipment, coxing, and recruiting."Â Â Â Â
Owyang has collegiate coaching experience at Loyola Marymount, Drexel, and Yale, He also has been the production leader and waterfront manager of Hydrow Inc. in Boston and an assistant coach at Oakland Strokes Inc. in Oakland.
With Loyola Marymount, Owyang designed and implemented fitness and technical training regimens for 35 student-athletes that led to personal fitness records for over 90% of the team. He also directed all recruiting efforts, including the creation of a database to track and analyze individual recruits throughout the multi-year recruitment process. He helped the program to West Coach Conference championships in 2018 and 2019 and helped the 2019 Varsity 4+, second Varsity 4+, and 2018 second varsity 4+ to gold medals. Owyang's crews medaled on eight occasions between the two championship seasons.Â
At Drexel, Owyang's squad was the winner of the 8+ Sport Council Cup at the 2010 Henley Women's Regatta. He mainly worked with the Junior Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+. At Yale University, Owyang led the men's second freshmen 8+ to a third-place finish at Eastern Sprints.
At Hydrow Inc., he led a team of 10 production crew members and instructors in the execution of live and on-demand virtual fitness classes. He also ensured the filming of daily, live-streaming , and on-demand content across waterways and venues across the country in compliance with internal and external regulations. While with Oakland Strokes, his crews of men's novice 4+ and 8+ all medaled at the 2016 and 2017 USRowing Southwest Regional Championship.
Owyang received his degree in International Studies from Trinity College in 2007, where he was a four-year coxswain. He won four New England Rowing Championships, two ECAC National Invitational Championships, and the Head of the Charles in the Collegiate Eight. He was also a coxswain for the Bantam Boat Club, where he placed third in the Men's 8+ at the USRowing Elite National Championships and was a quarterfinalist in the Ladies' Challenge Plate at the Henley Royal Regatta.
