Stewart?s Third Straight Double-Double Leads Delaware Volleyball Past William & Mary, 3-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- For the first time since the second match of the season, the University of Delaware volleyball team is back to a .500 winning percentage, defeating Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary, 3-0, on Friday night at the Kaplan Arena.
Set scores for the match were 25-16, 25-19, and 28-26.
Delaware (11-11, 4-2 CAA) has won three straight, all CAA matches, and five of its last six matches overall. The loss was the second straight in conference play for William & Mary (7-11, 1-5 CAA).
Senior Kim Stewart (above right), the reigning CAA Player of the Week, kept the hot hand going, finishing with her third straight double-double. She had a match-high 15 kills while adding 10 digs for the match. She committed only three errors on 40 swings for an even .300 hitting percentage. It was Stewart's sixth double-double of the year.
Katie Hank was the only other Blue Hen with double figure kills with 10, while Chelsea Lawrence finished with seven. Renee Tomko collected 32 assists to spread the offense.
In addition to Stewart's 10 digs, libero Cara Rosehill had a team high 11 to lead the back row, while freshman Alyssa Walton added 10 digs.
The Blue Hens used a 9-2 run in the first set to turn a 9-6 deficit into a 14-11 lead. Lawrence, Tomko and Hank picked up kills during the early run. Three points later, a kill by Alissa Alker started a string of seven consecutive points for the Hens, as they took over the game. A block by Stewart and Lawrence and a kill by Stewart during the run gave UD a 22-13 lead. Hank ended the set with a kill, 25-16.
Another late run was the deciding factor in the second set, as the game was knotted at 17-17. Back-to-back kills by Hank gave the Hens the lead for good, while Delaware went up 20-17. Another string of four consecutive points, aided by two more kills by Hank and a kill by Tomko, had the game at set point. A service error by the Tribe ended the game, 25-19.
Delaware jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in game three, but William & Mary fought back to eventually get within one at 17-16. The Hens stretch the lead to 23-20 with a kill from Lawrence, but the Tribe rallied and scored four straight points to get within set point. Following a Delaware timeout, Stewart retied the game at 24-24, and back-to-back points gave the Hens the advantage. Again tied at 26-26, Hank gave the team match point while Alker and Karina Evans ended it with the teams' eighth block of the night.
Monika Stanciauskas finished with 10 kills to lead the Tribe. She hit at a .429 clip while Alexandra Ciaccio hit .545 for the match. Ciaccio collected seven kills on 11 swings with one error for the night. Libero Celine Alasomuka tallied a match high 17 digs while Paulette Grand Pre followed closely with 15. Carolina Rivas matched Tomko with a match high 32 assists.
The Blue Hens remain on the road for another match Saturday night before returning to Newark. They will travel to Richmond to take on CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m.
