Miller's Goal Snaps VCU's Scoreless Streak As Hens Play to a 1-1 Draw (Oct. 14, 2011)

Miller's seventh goal of the season snapped a 532-minute scoreless streak Ram goalkeeper Kristin Carden was working on dating back to a 1-0 loss against Hofstra on Sept. 25. The streak was the second longest in VCU history.
“Getting a point tonight was good for us,” said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda, who logged the 34th tie during his tenure with the program. “We gave up a soft goal at the beginning of the first half. Our kids played a phenomenal second half. We made a couple of adjustments and in all honesty, I don't know how many times they crossed midfield.”
With the draw, Delaware brought its Colonial Athletic Association point total to 10, keeping the Hens in the mix for the six-team conference tournament.
The game-tying goal came on a rebounded shot from Tania Domingos, who was stopped by a diving Carden. But Miller was there to corral the rebound and tie the game at the 88:03 mark.
Delaware (7-5-2, 3-2-1 CAA) outshot the Rams17-7, putting 10 attempts on goal. Carden made nine saves on the night, including six in the second half alone. She also made two in the first overtime period and one in the second.
VCU (5-7-3, 3-2-2) controlled the action early, taking five shots in the first half, but Delaware's offense, which allows just 1.1 goals per game, turned up the defense pressure and gave up just two shots over the final 65 minutes of the game.
It was a night of rebounds as the Rams jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Courtney Conrad took the initial attempt, but Hen goalkeeper Breanna Stemler made one of her three saves on the attempt. Maren Johansen finished the rebound for her second tally of the year.
The Rams had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, as Delaware was not awarded a corner until the first overtime period. The Hens were whistled for 10 fouls, while VCU was called just six times, but earned two yellow cards, with one at the end of regulation and the second midway through the first overtime.
Delaware looks to exact revenge in its next game on Sunday, taking on CAA rival James Madison, which is currently No. 7 in this week's NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings. The Dukes beat Delaware 4-0 in Harrisonburg, Va. last season. Game time is set for noon at Delaware Mini-Stadium followed by a men's soccer game vs. Hofstra at 3 p.m. as part of a doubleheader weekend.
