University of Delaware Volleyball Swept in CAA Road Action, Fall to Hofstra 3-0

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Hofstra used a .382 hitting percentage for the match to rally past the University of Delaware volleyball team, 3-0, in Colonial Athletic Association action on Sunday afternoon at the Hofstra Physical Education Building.
Set scores for the match were 25-15, 25-19, and 25-20.
The loss gives Delaware (8-11, 1-2 CAA), the four-time defending CAA regular season champions, its second conference loss this season after dropping only a single CAA match all of last season. Hofstra (11-8, 2-1 CAA) bounced back after dropping a four-set match to Towson Friday night.
Katie Hank was the lone Blue Hen with double digit kills (10), hitting .235 for the match while committing only two errors on 34 swings. Alissa Alker recorded nine kills while Kim Stewart added eight. Renee Tomko collected 29 assists on the afternoon, while Cara Rosehill led the back row with 15 digs.
It was the first victory for the Pride over the Blue Hens since the 2006 season when Hofstra advanced to the CAA championship game with a 3-2 victory over Delaware in the semifinals.
After falling in a 2-0 hole in the first set, Hofstra scored 11 of the next 13 points to set the tone of the match. Leading 15-10, the Pride went on a 7-1 run to seize control of the set. The teams settled for a 25-15 game score.
Tied at 9-9 in the second set, a kill by Nikkie Kinnier gave Hofstra its final lead of the game. Leading 17-15, a kill by Taylor Moore and a block by Erika Charry and Kinnier forced Delaware head coach Bonnie Kenny into a timeout. After Delaware earned a point coming out of the timeout, the Pride took the next three points to take a 22-16 lead. The teams would trade the next six points as Hofstra won the set, 25-19.
Kenny was forced to call an early timeout in game three after an ace by Erika Charry and a kill by Catalina Charry gave the home squad a 7-3 lead. But Delaware responded with seven consecutive points, capped by a kill by Hank to take a 10-7 lead. But the momentum swung back in favor of Hofstra, as the Pride took the next four points to reclaim the lead, 11-10.
Two kills each by Hank and Alker, sandwiched around a Pride point, gave Delaware the 17-15 advantage, but Hofstra then took over the set. Five straight points caused Kenny into another timeout as the Hens gave up the lead and fell behind 20-17. Delaware's Karina Evans cut it to one point at 20-19 with her third ace of the match, but Hofstra scored five of the next six points to take the set, and the mach, 25-20.
Kelsie Wills led the Pride with 12 kills while Kinnier and Erika Charry also posted double-digit terminations with 11 and 10, respectively. Catalina Charry passed out 43 helpers to set the offense while Kylee Maneja had 24 digs to lead the back line.
After a four-game road swing, the Blue Hens return home next weekend when they take on CAA rivals James Madison and George Mason. The match against JMU on Friday, Oct. 7 is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
