Soccer America Team of the Week
WILTON, Conn. -- For a second time this season, a University of Delaware player has been named to the Soccer America Men's Team of the Week.
After a five-point week last week, Blue Hen senior forward Evans Frimpong has been named to the weekly team.
Frimpong is the second Delaware player to earn the honors this season. Sophomore and fellow forward Roberto Giménez was named to the team on Sept. 26.
In a pair of Colonial Athletic Association games, Frimpong was instrumental in Delaware going 2-0 against George Mason and William & Mary. The Hens knocked off the Patriots 2-1 followed by a 2-0 blanking of William & Mary, defeating the Tribe for the first time at the Hens home field.
In the first game last week, Frimpong, who was named CAA Co-Player of the Week, dished out the game-winning assist to fellow senior Kyle Ellis. Four days later, Frimpong put away two goals to knock off William & Mary in a rematch of the 2010 CAA semifinals. His two goals against the Tribe was the fifth time this season the shifty forward scored two goals in one game.
Delaware has only beaten the Tribe twice, both coming under current head coach Ian Hennessy, who earned the team's initial win over William & Mary in his first season in 2006.
Frimpong, who was also named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Player this week, has been a force at home in league game, scoring six of his 11 goals during CAA action. After his multi-goal effort on Saturday, his fifth of the season, Frimpong became Delaware's first double-digit goal scorer since Sobhan Tadjalli in 2004.
With his 11 goals this season, Frimpong has helped lead one of the most potent offenses not only in the CAA, but the nation as well. Through this weekend's games, Delaware averages 2.14 goals per game, good enough for third in the league. As of last week's NCAA statistical rankings, Delaware held down the No. 11 spot out of 200 NCAA Division I teams while Frimpong was ranked No. 18 on the individuals list.
Individually within in the CAA, Frimpong is the league's second leading point-getter with 26, stemming from 11 goals and four assists. He has tallied the most points for a UD individual since Hennessy became the head coach in 2006 and has the most since John Petito posted 35 points (14g, 7a) in 1982.
Joining Frimpong on the Soccer America Team of the Week are goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Davidson), defender Brenton Griffiths (South Florida), midfielders Marc Cintron (Providence), Nick Grendon (Northwestern), Jonathan Mendoza (Stetson), Kevin Schulte (UC Davis) and forwards Darren Mattocks (Akron), Joshua Patterson (Duquesne), Babayele Sodade (UAB) and Charlie Rugg (Boston College).
Delaware, now 10-3-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the CAA after a 2-2 draw with Towson on Wednesday, travels to Wilmington, N.C. to take on the Seahawks of UNCW in a pivotal CAA matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday at UNCW Soccer Complex.
