NEWARK, Del. - A crucial piece of the Delaware men's soccer staff over the past four years, Justin Makar, has been promoted to associate head coach, head coach Tommy McMenemy announced Thursday.Â
"I am thrilled to announce the promotion of Justin Makar to associate head coach," McMenemy said. "Justin's dedication has been central to our program's growth since we arrived in 2022, and no one is more deserving of this recognition. Whether it's on the recruiting trail, the training field, or in the office, Justin works tirelessly towards building our shared vision for the University of Delaware men's soccer program. I'm excited for him to continue playing a pivotal role as we look to push this team to greater heights."
Makar came to Newark in 2022 after working with McMenemy at the University of Michigan. In his four years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Makar has contributed to the consistent growth of the program.Â
"I'm honored to be named associate head coach for the Delaware men's soccer program," Makar said. "I want to thank our Director of Athletics & Campus Recreation, Jordan Skolnick, and head coach Tommy McMenemy for their continued trust and support. I'm grateful to our staff and student-athletes—past and present—whose daily commitment and sacrifice continue to drive our program forward. A special thank you to my wife, Joci, and our children, Jules and Jonah. The time, energy, and dedication this profession demands would not be possible for me without their support. UD is a special place, and my family and I are incredibly proud to be Blue Hens."
Makar helped lead Delaware to a historic and record-breaking 2025 campaign in the program's 100th season and its first year competing in The Summit League. The Blue Hens posted a 12-2-3 overall record and advanced to The Summit League Semifinals, finishing with the fewest losses (2) in program history among seasons with at least 15 matches. Delaware opened the year with the best start in program history (7-0), went unbeaten in its first 10 matches (9-0-1), and finished the season undefeated at home (8-0).
In the 2025 season, Delaware broke 16 program records and emerged as the top attacking team in the nation, finishing first nationally in scoring offense (2.82 goals per game) and points per game (8.53), while ranking second in goal differential (+37). Delaware led The Summit League in 17 team statistical categories and 15 individual categories. Individually, junior Rich Monath was named The Summit League Midfielder of the Year, while the Blue Hens produced seven All-Summit League selections, four All-ECAC honorees, and six CSC Academic All-District recipients.Â
