Heim Takes Second, Carnall Claims Third at Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational

Heim finished second in the University Level 6 bracket as Carnall wrapped up third place in the Universal Level 7 series.
Heim (at right) opened the weekend up with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Washington & Lee's Trelsie Sadler and survived a 7-6 (10-5), 6-4 scare against Navy's Erin Snook in the semifinals. It took extra sets from Mary Washington's Lindsay Raulston to claim the title over Heim, who battled 2-6, 7-6, 10-3.
Carnall, Delaware's winningest singles player, reached the semifinals in the Universal Level Seven bracket before falling to the third place matchup. The Blue Hen senior cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 first round win over Howard's Brittney Morgan, but fell in the semis to VCU's Marketa Placha 6-1, 6-2. In the third place round, Carnall knocked off Darien Seans of Navy 6-1, 7-5.
Two Hens reached the fifth-place round of the Level 6 bracket as Kim Milla and Christina Harrington each fell in their opening round matches. Milla bounced back with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Mary Washington's Michelle Meadows while Harrington coasted 6-1, 6-0 over Dye Das of Navy. The two did not compete the fifth place match, however, Harrington played Meadows in an exhibition match. The Blue Hen won 6-2, 6-2.
In the Level 7 bracket, Dorothy Safron and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom represented Delaware. Both fell in their first matches, but Safron went on to claim fifth place in the top bracket. After the initial loss, Safron won 6-0, 6-3 in the consolation bracket over Loyola's Rachel Janasek. Safron claimed the fifth-place title in a walkover against Katelyn Stokes of Howard.
Safron and Carnall teamed up to finish fifth place in the Level 7 doubles bracket. After falling 8-4 in their initial match, the Hen pairing went 8-3 over Navy's Stefanie Ton and Emani Decquir to reach the fifth-place title match. The Delaware duo downed another Navy pair, this time wining 8-4 over Darlen Sears and Abby Shewalter.
Delaware returns to action Oct. 15 and 16 at the Lehigh Invitational. The two-day event will be held at Lehigh's Lewis Tennis Center/Ulrich Varsity Courts and will feature Delaware, Lehigh, St. Francis (Pa.), Lafayette and Loyola (Md.).
