RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware junior Elena Delle Donne earned Colonial Athletic Association and College Sports Madness Player of the Week honors for the second straight week Monday after leading the Blue Hen women's basketball squad to an impressive 80-71 upset win over No. 11 Penn State last Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delle Donne, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and an Associated Press Preseason All-American, recorded a double-double with a game-high 40 points and 12 rebounds. Her 40 points marked the 18th 30-point game of Delle Donne's career and set a BCC record as the third highest in school history, trailing only her school-record 54-point performance at James Madison on Feb. 18, 2010 and her 41-point explosion against Yale on Nov. 20, 2010.
The junior guard/forward also added four blocks, three steals, and an assist as Delaware defeated its highest ranked opponent in school history and posted it third Top 25 victory in 29 tries in school history.
Delle Donne went 15 of 23 from the field and drained 10 of 12 of her free throw attempts. She scored 25 of her game-high 40 points in the second half as Delaware recovered from an eight-point deficit midway through the second half to help lead the Blue Hens to their victory over Penn State.
Delle Donne, who was named to the Preseason Wade National Player of the Year Watch List and Preseason John Wooden Top 30 List, earned the ninth CAA Player of the Week award of her three-year career. Ashley Betz-White of Old Dominion earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week.
A native of Wilmington, Del. (Ursuline Academy), Delle Donne also received College Sports Madness Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for the second straight week.
Delle Donne and the Blue Hens (2-0) travel to Villanova (3-1) tonight to take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m. in their first road-game of the season.
