Gimenez's Three Points Help Hens Draw 3-3 With Seton Hall (Sept.1, 2011)

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Sophomore midfielder Roberto Gimenez made his first career pointscount, helping the University of Delaware men's soccer team in a back-and-forth contest Thursday night as the Hens played to a 3-3 draw at Seton Hall University.
Gimenez led the Hens (1-0-1) with three points, scoring Delaware's first goal of the night at Owen T. Carroll Field, followed by an assist on the team's second score.
Seton Hall (0-1-1) never had the chance to pull away, taking the lead three separate times, only to have Delaware answer and tie the contest on all three lead changes.
“I thought there was excellent soccer from both sides tonight,” said sixth-year head coach Ian Hennessy. “I would always like more from a game in which you score three goals away from home, but credit Seton Hall this evening. Overall, I know from experience this can be a difficult place for away teams to come to, so I am happy for the lads to have taken something away tonight.”
The game served as a homecoming for Hennessy, who was an All-American for Seton Hall and 1990 graduate.Hennessy still stands in the Pirates' record books, ranking second in career points (134) and goals (52). Hennessy was inducted into the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame on February 2006, less than a month after becoming Delaware's headman.
It didn't take long for the scoring to get going in Delaware's first meeting with Seton Hall since 1941.
The Pirates found the back of the net just 10 minutes into the game, snapping a 426 minute regular season shutout streak for Hen goalkeeper Brandon Paul. The streak dated back to the 77th minute of Delaware's Oct. 10, 2010 contest at James Madison. Seton Hall's Max Garcia 's first goal of the season came unassisted.
But the Hens answered in the 19th minute as Gimenez tallied his first career goal with Delaware. Senior forward Evans Frimpong, currently ranked 91st on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Top 100 Players List, was credited with the assist, bringing his season point total to five, including a pair of goals in Delaware's opener against Massachusetts.
Neither team could find the goal in the remaining 25 minutes of the first half, heading into the break tied at 1-1.
Twenty-five minutes in the second half, the Pirates snapped the tie and took a 2-1 lead as Adriano Gabriele converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute of the contest.
Not to be outdone, Delaware answered yet again, tying the game in the 77th minute. Senior midfielder Kyle Ellis buried a shot for his first goal of the year, turning on a pass from Gimenez.
With the game in the waning minutes, Seton Hall once again grabbed control in the 88th minute. Garcia tallied his second marker of the game to put the Pirates up 3-2.
But yet again, Delaware knotted the action after sophomore back Tobias Müller got his first tally as a Blue Hen. The Steinfurt, Germany native found the goal in the 88th minute to force overtime and keep the Hens alive in the match.
It was a chippy affair from the get go, with eight yellow cards handed out during the match. Three players received two yellows and were consequently ejected during the overtime period.
Seton Hall was called for 28 fouls over the course of the double overtime contest while the Hens were whistled 18 times. Delaware held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Pirates were called offsides nine times and the Hens just twice.
Delaware finished the game with 18 shots, putting half of those attempts on goal. The Pirates managed 17 attempts, also putting nine on goal. Both Paul and Seton Hall's goalkeeper, Anthony Reichwaldt, posted six saves.
Delaware is idle until Sept. 14 when it makes the trek to Buffalo, N.Y. to face the Griffs of Canisius College. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at Demske Sports Complex.
