Alker Named to All-Tournament Team But University of Delaware Volleyball Drops a Pair to Yale and Host Maryland, 3-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - - The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped a pair of matches, 3-1, to Yale and host Maryland at the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational on Saturday at the Comcast Pavilion.
Set scores against Yale were 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-20.
Set scores against Maryland were 25-21, 25-14, 24-26, and 25-22.
Junior outside hitter Alissa Alker (above right) was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Blue Hens (2-8) in kills and attack percentage over the two-day tournament.
Alker tallied 44 kills (3.67 per set) with only 13 errors on 112 attempts to hit .277 in the three matches. She was also second on the team in digs (43) and third in total blocks (8). She upped her season average to 3.13 kills per set over the weekend.
In the day's first contest against Yale (2-7), the Blue Hens opened the match by winning the first set, 26-24. But the Bulldogs bounced back to take the net three sets to win the match.
Katie Hank led the Blue Hens with a match high 17 kills, hitting at a .286 clip. She recorded a double-double with 10 digs as well. Kim Stewart and Alker also recorded double-digit kills with 14 and 12, respectively.
Cara Rosehill paced the backline of the defense against Yale, notching 19 digs. Alker, Stewart and Renee Tomko each added 15 digs as well.
In the nightcap, the Blue Hens still had a chance at the tournament championship, facing host Maryland (5-4).
They found themselves down two sets to one, but didn't roll over at they fought back to take the third set in extra points, 26-24.
The Hens were facing three match points to the Terrapins, but kills from Stewart, Tomko, and Hank knotted the game at 24-24 to force the extra score. Hank made it four straight points with a kill, forcing Maryland to call a timeout.
After the mini-break, an attack error by Adreene Elliot gave the Blue Hens life for another set.
But Maryland came out and took the lead for good in the fourth at 13-12. Trailing 23-17, Delaware tried to make it two straight late game comebacks, and got it to within 23-20 and 24-22, but couldn't complete the rally.
Sacred Heart went 2-1 over the weekend, taking the tournament championship.
Joining Alker on the All-Tournament team was Sacred Heart's Dianis Mercado, Jessica Colberg and Kimmee Roleder, Maryland's Caitlin Adams and Maddi Lee, and Yale's Mollie Rogers. Mercado was named the Tournament's MVP.
Delaware returns to action on Tuesday when they face Temple on Barb Viera Court. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
