Gimenez Scores for Hens in 1-0 Victory Over Canisius (Sept. 10, 2011)

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware men's soccer team got its first-ever win at Demske Sports Complex Saturday afternoon, getting the victory 1-0 over Canisius College.
Sophomore forward Roberto Giménez extended his point streak to three as the Hens improved to 2-0-1 for the first time since 2006, head coach Ian Hennessy's first season with the program.
“Great to come away with a road victory again today,” said Hennessy of the teams first road win of the year. “A lot of credit to the group for the clean sheet against a stubborn Canisius team who pressed us in the second half.”
Giménez, who has a point in each of the Hens' games this year, put away what proved to be the game winner in the 36th minute of the contest. Giménez deked his defender to the right and buried one of his 10 shots in the goal.
Delaware, which notched its second shutout of the season, had a chance to score an insurance goal in the 76th minute as Evans Frimpong took a penalty kick. Canisius' Ryan Schroen was given one of the games five yellow cards to set up the PK. Frimpong took the attempt, but Griff goalkeeper Ryan Arvin, turned the attempt aside.
Giménez led the way on offense, putting four of his 10 shots on goal. Frimpong and freshman Kyle Nuel were the only other Delaware players to register multiple shots, each taking two. Nuel put both his shots on goal while Frimpong's only shot on goal was the PK.
In goal for Delaware, Kris Devaux got his first start since Oct. 23, 2010. The 6-0 senior stopped all four Canisius (0-4-0) shots on goal to record his four career shutout. Opposite Devaux, Arvin made six stops during his 90 minutes of action.
The Hens defense, which was with out John Dineen, surrendered 17 shots while the offense managed 16. The Griffs challenged often in the second half, putting up 12 attempts. Dineen missed the game after being issued two yellow cards against Seton Hall last week.
Both teams took seven corner kicks during the game, with the Hens getting four in the first half.
Five yellow cards were issued during the game, including three on Delaware. Frimpong, Giménez and Darren O'Connor were given the games first three cards, while Schroen and Pat Conlon received Canisius' cards.
Delaware will conclude a three-game road swing on Sept. 14 when it travels to Annapolis, Md. to face the U.S. Naval Academy. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
