Hens Take on Navy on the Road, Columbia at Home this Week (Sept. 13, 2011)

Delaware face the Midshipmen in Annapolis at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility tomorrow at 7 p.m., their final tilt in a three-game road swing. The Hens (20-0-1) will return home on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to take on Columbia University at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Parking for the Navy Game (as per NavySports.com):
Due to security restrictions in place, only vehicles with a Department of Defense sticker on them will be allowed to drive onto the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy for ALL events. ALL VISITORS ARE REQUIRED to either park downtown and walk-in through the Visitors Center and its security checkpoint at Gate One, or else park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5. per vehicle) and ride the free shuttle bus to and from The Yard. Continuing the Streak:
With its 1-0 win over Canisius on Saturday afternoon, Delaware improved to 2-0-1 on the year, matching their best start since the 2006 season, Ian Hennessy's first season at UD.
Delaware is also working a six-game winning streak at Delaware Mini-Stadium, dating back to Oct. 2, 2010 in a 1-0 double-overtime win. Last year, the Hens were the only team in the CAA to go undefeated and untied at home in conference action.
Regional Rankings:
The University of Delaware is currently receiving votes in the most recent NSCAA/adidas South Atlantic Regional Polls, despite its 2-0-1 record and 1-0 win last week at Canisius.
Other Colonial Athletic Association teams in the regional rankings are: Old Dominion (No. 4), Virginia Commonwealth University (No. 5), College of William & Mary (No. 6), George Mason (No. 8) and Northeastern (No. 10).
The Series:
All-time against the Midshipmen, Delaware is 5-9-2, including a 2-5-1 mark in Annapolis. The two teams met last season in Newark, with Navy taking a 3-1 edge. In 2009, Delaware brought home a 2-0 win from Glenn Warner Field. Michael Stone an Eyal Gruber are the only two remaining Hens that saw time in that game, both getting the start.
The Hens have met Columbia just once, falling 3-0 last season on the road. This will be the Lions' first trip to Newark. Ben Raymond and Evans Frimpong managed the only shots on goal for Delaware in that contest. Kris Devaux played all 90 minutes in goal, making one save.
Scouting the Hens:
Five different Blue Hens have found the back of the net so far this season, including two who have a pair of goals.
Sophomore Roberto Giménez, currently ranked 20th nationally in points per game (2.0), is playing in his first year with Delaware and leads the way with six points on two goals and a pair of helpers. He has tallied at least one point in each game this year.
Fellow forward and senior Evans Frimpong, who was named No. 91 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's Top 100 Players Poll, also has a pair of markers and has posted on assist for five points.
The pair of forwards paces the Hens in shots, with Giménez taking 18 attempts and Frimpong with 10. Both Frimpong and Giménez have put half of their total shots on goal.
Kyle Ellis put away one shot and handed out one assist while Chas Wilson and Tobias Müller have each posted one marker. Vincent Mediate has aided on assist.
Between the pipes, Bandon Paul, ranked No. 108 in saves per game (3.5) has played a bulk of the time, logging 200 minutes, while Devaux has put in 90 minutes of work, getting the start against Canisius. Paul has made seven stops, while Devaux has logged four. Each goalkeeper has posted a shutout, with Paul's coming in the season opener 3-0 against Massachusetts and Devaux's on Saturday 1-0 at Canisius.
So far this season, Delaware has allowed just one first-half goal while facing 17 shots in the opening stanza. The Hens have spread their shots out even across the two periods of regulation, taking 21 in the first and 20 in the second.
Scouting the Mids:
The US Naval Academy puts a 1-2-2 record on the line. Most recently, the Mids played to a 1-1 draw against near-by foe UMBC. Alex Wilson tucked his first goal of the season on a rebound. But the Retrievers answered with five seconds left in regulation to force two scoreless overtimes.
No Midshipmen has tallied more than one goal this year, but seven have found the back of the net. Wilson leads in points with three, including an assist. Wes Powell is the feeder on the field, posting two assists while Taylor Cook has the Mids' fourth assist.
Delaware will need to keep an eye on Joseph Greenspan, a freshman, who leads the team with 19 total shots, putting a team-high seven on goal. David Jackson has also attempted double-digit shots (15), including five on goal. Wilson has put five of his nine on cage.
Head coach Dave Brandt is in his third year at the helm of the program after a highly successful career at NCAA Division III Messiah College (Pa.) where he won five national championships. Last season he posted Navy's first winning season since 2005.
Scouting the Lions:
Columbia has built its record to 3-1-1 after going 0-1-1 at the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Tournament, hosted by New Mexico State University. In their final game, the Lions played to a 0-0 draw against Missouri State.
Columbia has played a lot of soccer already this season, with three games going into overtime, including the 0-0 draw most recently. So far, Columbia has played in 479 minutes of soccer.
Will Stamis has tallied six points this year, all on goals. He has also taken a team-high 18 shots, outpacing David Najem, who has attempted 10. Najem has four points on a goal and a pair of assists.
Francois Anderson and Quentin Grigsby account for Columbia's other two goals. Anderson has three points with his one assist.
The Lions have split time in goal. Alexander Aurrichio has made four starts, seeing 344 minutes of action while Zach Glubiak has logged 135 minutes. Aurrichio has stopped seven as Glubiak has made six and has the team's best goals against average at 0.67.
