NEWARK, Del. – Junior forward Ali Miller picked a good time to score her first goals of the season, giving the University of Delaware women's soccer team a 2-0 win over in-state foe Delaware State University Friday night at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Hens won their third straight game over the Hornets in the annual Route 1 Rivalry, improving to 3-0 all-time in the series and 2-0 in Newark. Miller's goals were the 15th and 16th Delaware has scored against DSU.Both Miller markers were set up by senior forward Amy Pickard, the first in the 20th minute and the insurance goal in the 62nd minute.
For a second straight season, Delaware goalkeeper Breanna Stemler turned away the only Hornet shot on goal to preserve the Hens' clean sheet against Delaware State.
The two goals was the fewest the Hens have ever scored against Delaware State, having won the first two in-state meetings 7-0 in each.
The Hens (3-3-1) got back to a .500 record for the first time since Aug. 26 when they defeated Stony Brook University 3-0. It also marked the first back-to-back wins for Delaware this season.
“Delaware State came out and played a very good defense game,” said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda of the only other NCAA Division I school in Delaware. “It was great for us to get the win. I think we produced many good opportunities. I think our finishing has to improve, that's the difference and the name of the game.”
The Blue Hens kicked off the 2011 edition Route 1 Rivalry. Delaware football takes on the Hornets Saturday evening at Delaware Stadium while the volleyball team hosts DSU Tuesday at Barb Viera Court.
Weathering an onslaught of Delaware offense, the Hornets (1-7-1) did not allow a goal until the 20 minute mark, the latest the game's first goal has been scored in the series.
Miller was in the right place at the right time, controlling a rebound off the hands of DSU goalkeeper Katelyn Koslosky, who stopped an attempt by Pickard.
After taking a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break, Delaware again struggled to finish on shots, hitting the left post twice and the crossbar once before Miller buried her second goal.
Pickard, who was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week on Monday, dribbled down near the Delaware State goal line, drawing her defender with her before tipping in a pass to Miller, who put the ball away to the right post.
Stemler made just one save on Darcy Pelz-Butler's lone shot on goal, preserving a 270-minute scoreless streak for the Hornets. Delaware State managed just four shots the whole 90 minutes while Delaware attempted 24.
Koslosky was up to the task of facing 12 Hen shots on goal, making 10 saves in her 90 minutes of play. Miller was responsible for four of those shots on goal, finishing two of them. Sophomore Shannon Kearney was the only other Hen with multiple shots on goal with three.
Delaware's backs held the Hornets to just one shot in the second half while the offense up top managed 14 attempts in the opening period and 10 in the second. The Hens were called offsides seven times and had 10 fouls. Delaware State had just four fouls, all of which came in the second half.
After a two-game home stand, the Hens travel to West Point, N.Y. for their final non-conference game of the season. Delaware squares off with Army on Sunday at Clinton Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
