PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The University of Delaware women's cross country team will open its 2011 season on Saturday when the Blue Hens compete in the Hampton Inn Salisbury North/UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational.
The women's race will begin at 10:45 a.m., following the men's race which begins at 10 a.m.
The Blue Hens return 12 letterwinners from the 2010 squad that finished seventh in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, 16th in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, and 11th at the ECAC Championships.
The Blue Hens will be led by junior Katy Loughran (at right), who was Delaware's top finisher in four meets last year, including third and fourth place finishes in the two home events. Senior Jessie Ermak also returns after posting the top time by a Blue Hen in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals and ECAC Championships.
Also returning will be junior Katie Deinert and senior Ali Lambert, who each competed in all seven meets a year ago for UD, as well as sophomore Lindsay Prettyman, who competed in all but one event.
The UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational will be the first of eight meets this season for the Blue Hens, who will be led by fourth-year cross country coach Jim Fischer. Delaware will next be in action on Sept. 10 at the Fordham Invitational, before the Blue Hens host the Delaware Invitational a week later. Following the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh on Sept. 30, UD will host its second meet of the season on Oct. 15 with the Blue & Gold Invitational.
Delaware will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Oct. 29, the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Nov. 12, and the ECAC Championships on Nov. 19.
