NEWARK, Del -- On April 27, the most devastating string of tornadoes in Alabama history killed 238 people, as more than 60 tornadoes ravaged the state.
The biggest was an EF-4 tornado, the second strongest classification, with winds approaching 200 miles per hour ripping through a 12-mile stretch of death and destruction.
Personally touched by the force of Mother Nature, the University of Delaware volleyball team will host a special fund-raising event at its match against James Madison on Oct. 7 at the Carpenter Sports Building
on Viera Court.
As the Blue Hens continue their quest for a fifth straight CAA Championship, each point the team earns that night will have a greater significance than ever before. Fans can pledge to donate money based on the Blue Hens' performance.
Donations will be accepted based on statistics compiled by the Blue Hens during the match. Fans will have the choice of pledging dollar amounts for each kill, block, assist, dig, or ace compiled by the Blue Hens during the game. Fans will be encouraged to postmark their donations after the match to the relief fund by Saturday, Oct. 15. All proceeds will benefit the Franklin County Alabama Tornado Disaster Relief Fund.
The Franklin County relief fund is being administered through the Youth-Employment-Seniors (Y.E.S.) Foundation, which is a non-profit 501C3 organization. Therefore, all donations will be tax deductible. One hundred percent of the funds will be used in Franklin County.
According to the Franklin Y.E.S. Education Foundation's website, franklingyes.org, its mission is to “enhance and make available to the youth, employable citizens and senior citizens of Franklin County, Alabama, supplemental activities, workforce training and educational opportunities with an emphasis to bringing awareness of this need to the public and to secure additional resources.”
To donate, please make checks payable to Franklin County Alabama Tornado Disaster Relief Fund. To ensure your check donation is received as part of the volleyball team, please write “Friends of UD Volleyball” in the memo field.
Donations can be sent to Danny Brown, c/o CB&S Bank, at P.O. Box 910, Russellville, Ala., 35653.
The match against the Dukes on October 7 will begin at 7 p.m. with doors to Viera Court set to open at 6 p.m.
