Soccer America National Team of the Week (Sept. 19-25)
WILTON, Conn. -- After being named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week two weeks in a row and being named PhillySoccerNews.com Player of the Week, sophomore Roberto Giménez was named as a forward to the Soccer America Team of the Week.
Giménez, who hails from Calla Calatrava, Spain, earned this week's accolades after putting away a game-winning goal against Georgia State Saturday night in a 1-0 victory. He was the only player from the CAA to be named to the Soccer America team this week.
True to form in CAA games, the tilt was a defensive-minded affair and was one of seven league games so far this season decided by one goal. Giménez shook loose from his defender and received a pass from freshman Kyle Nuel. The Spaniard turned on the ball and finished to give Delaware their fifth straight win and improve to 6-0-1, the program's best start since 1985.
The marker was Giménez's sixth goal of the season, ranking him 17th nationally in goals per game (0.83). The game-winner, Giménez's second of the year, was the Hens' 18th goal of the season, tying their total from the 2010 season. Delaware is just five goals shy of the highest goal total for a season under head coach Ian Hennessy, who took over the program in 2006.
With the win, Delaware extended its regular season undefeated streak to 10, including an eight-game winning streak at Delaware Mini-Stadium. The Hens have scored at least one goal in their last seven games.
Giménez, who was named Delaware's National 5&10 Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week as well, was joined on the National Team of the Week by goalkeeper Andre Blake (Connecticut), forwards Will Bates (Virginia), Juan Castillo (SMU), National Player of the Week Ethan Finlay (Creighton), Darren Mattocks (Akron), Gyasi Zardes (Cal State Bakersfield), midfielders Adam Jahn (Stanford), Luis Silva (UC Santa Barbara) and defenders Jordie Ciuffetelli (Lehigh) and Dan Klarza (Notre Dame).
Delaware will look to extend its streaks this Friday when it heads to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion University, No. 20 in this week's NSCAA rankings. Game time between the Hens, who are ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region, and Monarchs is set for 7 p.m. at the Old Dominion Soccer Complex.
