UD Ready to Roll Into Norfolk to Face No. 20 ODU Friday Night (Sept. 29, 2011)

NEWARK, Del. -- After a rousing last minute victory over Georgia State Saturday night, the University of Delaware men's soccer team looks to continue its hot start this weekend as the Hens continue Colonial Athletic Association action.
The Blue Hens (6-0-1, 1-0 CAA) will hit the road and make the trek to Norfolk, Va. to face No. 20 Old Dominion University Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Old Dominion Soccer Complex.

Back Into the Regional Rankings
After a two-week absence from the NSCAA/adidas South Atlantic Regional Top 10 rankings, the Blue Hens have climbed back into the rankings, holding down the No. 10 spot in this week's poll. Old Dominion is currently ranked No. 5 in the South Atlantic Region and No. 20 in the national polls.
Keeping the Streak Alive
With Saturday's 1-0 win over Georgia State, Delaware extended several streaks, including its regular season unbeaten streak, which now stands at 10.
The Hens are of to their best start (6-0-1) under head coach Ian Hennessy, who has been the headman since 2006. The hot start is the program's best since 1985 when Delaware opened 8-0-1 under UD Athletics Hall of Fame coach Loren Kline.
With the first win of the CAA schedule under their belts, the Hens have won their last seven conference home games, besting the program's previous mark of six, set during the 1985-86 seasons. In 2010, Delaware was the only team in the CAA to go undefeated and untied at home in league play.
Delaware has scored at least one goal in each of its last seven games. Delaware Mini-Stadium has proven to be a place of comfort for the Hens, who have scored at least one goal over each of their last 10 homes.
Picking up Plaudits Again
Sophomore Roberto Giménez has picked up several plaudits in the last two weeks. He has twice been named the CAA Rookie of the Week, the first player this season to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks.
Last Monday, Giménez, along with UD women's soccer player Chelsea Duffy, was named the PhillySoccerNews.com Player of the Week in addition to the conference honors. This week, Giménez was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week, one of the nation's most prestigious weekly honors.
NCAA Stat Summaries (Through 9/25/11)
Each week, the NCAA compiles statistics from each of its member schools and ranks individuals and teams in each category. For its Division I level, the NCAA ranks 200 schools and 150 student-athletes in each major category.
In this week's statistical rankings, Delaware was ranked in the top half of nearly every category, including team win-loss-tie percentage, where the Hens occupy the No. 4 spot (92.9 percent).
Delaware's high-powered offense is ranked No. 8, averaging 2.57 goals per game while also ranked No. 61 in goals against average (0.97). The Hens' 18 total games ranks No. 14 in the nation. The 18 markers ties the team's total from the entire 2010 season and is just five away from the 23 scored in 2009, the highest goal total under Hennessy.
Between goalkeepers Brandon Paul and Kris Devaux, Delaware has the nation's 19th-best shutout percentage (0.57) and the 84th best save percentage (.767). The two keepers have a combined saves per game average of 3.29, ranking Delaware 143rd.
On the individual side, several Hens are ranked in the top 150 in the country, including Giménez, who is currently seventh in the nation in points per game (2.33). He is also 22nd in total points (14.0), 17th in goals per game (0.83) and total goals (5), 10th in assists per game (0.67), and 23rd in total assists (4).
Joining the Spanish forward in the national stat rankings is Evans Frimpong, who currently ranked 21st nationally in points per game (1.86), 32nd in total points (13.0), 27th in goals per game (0.71), 34th in total goals (5), 74th in assists per game (0.43), and 69th in total assists (3).
Senior Kyle Ellis is the third member of the team who has reached the national statistical rankings. He is 77th in points per game (1.29), 100th in total points (9), 62nd in goals per game (0.57), and is 68th in total goals (4.0).
In goal, Devaux is listed in three categories, including 48th in goals against average (0.8), 67th in save percentage (0.789), and 147th in saves per game (3.0).
The Series
Old Dominion controls the series, which will be renewed for the 15th time Friday night, winning 11 of the 14 previous matchups. The two squads first met in 1976, a contest Delaware won.
But Old Dominion then rattled off nine straight victories over the Hens. Recently however, Delaware has enjoyed some success against ODU, winning two of the last four meetings, including a 1-0 overtime thriller in Newark last year.
Then senior, now assistant coach, Jon Scheer put away the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 104th minute of the match.
Scouting the Blue Hens (As of Sept. 29)
The Blue Hens improved to 6-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the CAA after a spectacular finish to Saturday night's game against Georgia State in which Giménez tallied the game-winner in the 89th minute.
As a team, Delaware averages 2.57 goals per game, helped by the squad putting 53.4 percent of their shots on goal, forcing opposing keepers and defenses to try and contain Delaware.
On the opposite side of the field, the Delaware keepers and back-line have allowed just 1.0 goals per game this season, while holding the opposition to put just 30 of their 80 shots on goal.
Delaware does a good job of blocking passes, giving up just three assists on seven opponent goals so far this year. The Hens are deadliest in the second stanza, where they have scored 13 of their 18 goals. The backs and keepers have done an effective job in the first half, letting up just one goal all year.
One thing that makes Delaware's offense deadly is the number of people who have the ability to score. So far this season, six players have scored goals and only three of them are multiple-goal scorers.
Scouting the Monarchs (As of Sept. 29)
Old Dominion, favored to win the conference in the preseason coaches' poll, slipped to 4-2-0 overall this season and 0-1-0 in the CAA after suffering a pair of losses in its last two games. After falling to George Mason 1-0 last week, the Monarchs dropped a 3-0 decision to No.4 North Carolina on Tuesday night.
Old Dominion has not scored a goal since its game-winner in a 3-2 victory against Elon on the road on Sept. 17.
Yannick Smith is ODU's top threat in the offensive third, tallying 13 points (5g, 6a), tying him for third in the conference with Delaware's Frimpong. Gideon Asante, who was named to Preseason All-CAA team, is second with nine points (3g, 3a).
The Monarchs have enjoyed the friendly confines of the Old Dominion Soccer Complex, where they hold a 2-0-0 record so far this season.
