Blue Hen Women Harriers Place Third in Season-Opening UMES Lid-Lifter Meet; Prettyman Places 12th Overall

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The University of Delaware women's cross country squad opened the 2011 season with a solid showing Saturday morning as the Blue Hens posted a third place finish and had five runners place in the top 25 at the Maryland-Eastern Shore Lid-Lifter at the UMES Cross Country Course.
Navy won the team title with 15 points and was followed by West Virginia and Delaware in the eight-team field. Jess Palacio of Navy took the top individual honors as she raced to a time of 17:41.49. Navy captured each of the top five places and seven of the top 10 spots in the race.
Sophomore Lindsay Prettyman (at right) led the Blue Hens with a 12th place finish as she covered the five-kilometer course in 19:01.42. Freshman Nicole Daly placed 14th for the Hens in 19:06.62 and senior Sophie Kauffman was 20th in 19:26.83 for head coach Jim Fischer's squad.
Prettyman led the Blue Hens for the first time in her two-year career and matched her career-best finish, tying her 12th place finish at last year's Delaware Invitational.
Jess Olsen also added a 23rd place finish for the Hens at 19:46.17, Alyssa Kennedy was 24th (19:46.72), and Meredith Steenkamer finished 27th (20:04.26).
In all, a total of 25 Blue Hen student-athletes competed in the race, which attracted nearly 100 runners.
Delaware will return to action next Saturday when the Blue Hen head to the Bronx to compete in the Fordham Invitation at Van Cortlandt State Park.
