Hens Ranked in Top 10 of NSCAA/adidas Regional Poll (Sept. 6, 2011)

KANSAS CITY, Kan.-- After a pair of quality results in its first two games, the University of Delaware men's soccer team has landed in the top-10 of the NSCAA/adidas South Atlantic Regional Rankings.
The Blue Hens landed in ninth on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, dropping one spot from the Aug. 30 poll. Delaware is 1-0-1 so far this season, averaging three goals an outing. The Hens downed the University of Massachusetts 3-0 in the season opener, followed by a 3-3 tie in a seesaw game at Seton Hall Thursday night.
Delaware was among six schools from the Colonial Athletic Association to land a spot in the polls. Joining the Hens were William & Mary (No. 3), Virginia Commonwealth University (No. 4), Northeastern University (No. 6), Old Dominion University (No. 7) and George Mason University (No. 8).
“I think the CAA will continue to be a dominant conference in college soccer again this year,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy, who is currently in his sixth season at the helm of the program. “The CAA ended up in sixth as a conference right behind the Big East in the RPI last year and I would not be surprised if we surpass some of the other major conferences this year again. I think it is terrific for Delaware that we are being ranked in a region that includes the traditional ACC powerhouses.”
The University of Maryland headlined the regional rankings, followed by Boston College in second. The University of Virginia earned the No. 5 spot, while Campbell (N.C). University rounded out the top 10.
Five schools received votes, including CAA opponent James Madison University. Also picking up votes were High Point University, Coastal Carolina University, Radford University and Winthrop University.
Delaware will play its second game in a three-game road swing this Saturday afternoon, taking on the Griffs of Canisius College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
