RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware junior Elena Delle Donne has earned Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week accolades for the fourth time this season after helping the No. 21 ranked Blue Hen women's basketball squad to a 1-1 week in the Maryland Terrapin Classic.
The Hens (10-1) picked up a 60-40 victory over East Carolina on Wednesday in the opening round before dropping a close 85-76 verdict to host No. 5 Maryland on Thursday in the championship game.
Delle Donne, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and an Associated Press Preseason All-American who leads the nation in scoring with 28.8 points per game, poured in 27.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per outing in the two games, averaging 52.9 percent (18 of 34) from the floor and 94.1 percent (16 of 17) from the line. She also added three assists, six blocks, and three steals on the week.
The 6-5 junior, who was named to the Terrapin Classic All-Tournament team, surpassed the 30-point mark for the fifth time this season and eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the 16th straight game. She currently ranks second in the Blue Hen record book with 1,648 career points, just 27 points shy of tying the all-time scoring record.
In Delaware's showdown with East Carolina (6-7) in the Terrapin Classic Semifinals on Wednesday, Delle Donne led the Blue Hens by scoring 22 points to go with nine rebounds in just 30 minutes of action to help lead Delaware to a perfect 10-0 start, the Blue Hens' best-ever start to the season in the 41-year history of the program.
Despite Delle Donne scoring a game-high 32 points and going a perfect 10 of 10 from the charity stripe in Delaware's battle vs. Maryland (14-0), the Blue Hens suffered their first setback of the season, dropping a tightly-fought decision to a Terrapin team that, along with Delaware, was among only nine NCAA Division I teams still without a loss.
Delle Donne, who was named to the Preseason Wade National Player of the Year Watch List, Preseason John Wooden Top 30 List, and the Naismith Early-Season National Player of the Year Watch List, earned the 12th CAA Player of the Week award of her three-year career. She shares this week's recognition with Courtney Hurt of Virginia Commonwealth, who earned Player of the Week honors for the third straight week. Ashley Betz-White of Old Dominion was named CAA Rookie of the Week.
Delle Donne and the Blue Hens (10-1) will return to action Jan. 5 when Delaware resumes Colonial Athletic Association action by hosting Towson at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
