RICHMOND, Va. --University of Delaware junior Elena Delle Donne, who was nearly unstoppable in a record-setting week, has earned Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week accolades for the fifth time this season after helping the No. 20 ranked Blue Hen women's basketball team to a 2-0 week in CAA action with victories over Towson and George Mason.
The Blue Hens (12-1, 3-0 CAA) won two consecutive games as they picked up a 74-51 home victory over Towson on Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center and a 66-54 road win at George Mason on Sunday.
Delle Donne, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and an Associated Press Preseason All-American who leads the nation in scoring with 30.3 points per game, eclipsed the 30-point mark twice last week as she averaged 38.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per outing in the two games, averaging 64.6 percent (31 of 48) from the floor and 90 percent (9 of 10) from the line. She also added five assists, seven blocks, and three steals on the week.
The 6-5 junior exploded for 37 points and became the school's all-time career scoring leader as the Blue Hens downed Towson (10-4, 1-2 CAA) for the fourth straight time. She broke the previous Delaware scoring record held by Cindy Johnson, who scored 1,675 points in 1997-01. Delle Donne set the record in just her 63rd career game while Johnson needed 113 games to reach the scoring mark. Johnson was on hand at the game to help celebrate the milestone.
In Delaware's showdown with George Mason (7-7, 1-2 CAA) on Sunday, Delle Donne recorded her fourth double-double of the season by scoring a season high-tying 40 points to go with 15 rebounds to help keep the Hens perfect in conference play. Delaware and Hofstra are currently tied atop the league standings with 3-0 marks.
Delle Donne, who was also named to the Preseason Wade National Player of the Year Watch List, Preseason John Wooden Top 30 List, and the Naismith Early-Season National Player of the Year Watch List, earned the 13th CAA Player of the Week award of her three-year career. She shares this week's recognition with Shante Evans of Hofstra, who earned Player of the Week honors for second time this season. Myeisha Hall of Old Dominion was named CAA Rookie of the Week.
Delle Donne and the Blue Hens look to remain hot as they return home to continue CAA action vs. UNC Wilmington on Thursday, Jan. 12 for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the Bob Carpenter Center.
A special Dad & Daughter Date Night promotion will take place with UD offering a $22 package that includes two games tickets, two dinner platters from the main concession station, and two small sized soft drinks.
