Athlete of the Week: Alissa Alker (Volleyball) Oct. 1, 2012

NEWARK, Del. -- Senior hitter Alissa Alker, who led the resurgent University of Delaware volleyball squad to a perfect 2-0 week, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending Oct. 1.
Alker, an honor student as a business management and marketing major at Delaware with a minor in international business, led the Hens to a perfect 2-0 week at home as the Hens snapped a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Morgan State on Tuesday and a 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association triumph over Georgia State on Friday night.
In the record-setting win over Morgan State, the Hens won easily by scores of 25-5, 25-13, and 25-12. Alker led the way by hitting .261 for the match as she had nine kills in 23 attempts with just three errors. She also recorded five digs and had two block assists.
Delaware, which hit .349 as a team, set a school record for fewest amount of points allowed in a three-set match in 25-point rally scoring as the 30 points was the lowest since the Blue Hens allowed just 35 points to Delaware State in a 25-12, 25-11, 25-12 victory on Sept. 23, 2008. The five points scored by Morgan State in the first set was the fewest the Hens have allowed in any match since defeating Hofstra 15-3 in the second set of a 3-2 loss on Nov. 5, 2000.
Three nights later the Hens (5-11, 1-1 CAA) evened their CAA record with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 victory over Georgia State at the Bob Carpenter Center. Alker led the way again as she recorded a game-high 14 kills in 37 attempts with just three errors and added 13 digs, two service aces, two assists, and one block assist.
"This is a great honor to be named Athlete of the Week," said Alker. "We're just going to get better every day and train hard to be the best team we can be. The other seniors and I are going to do everything possible to lead this team to another championship and make a run to the Sweet 16."
For the week, the San Diego, Calif. (Scripps Ranch HS) native hit .283 as she recorded 23 kills in 60 attempts with just six errors. She also ranked No. 2 on the team for the week with 18 digs. For the season, Alker leads the Blue Hens with 152 kills (2.81 per set), 179 points, and 13 service aces. She is hitting .193 and has also contributed 167 digs and 26 blocks.
The three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association performer will lead the Blue Hens into a busy week this week as Delaware hosts in-state rival Delaware State in the annual Route One Rivalry Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center before hitting the road for two key CAA matchups at UNCW on Friday, Oct. 5 and at William & Mary Sunday, Oct. 7.
