PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Blue Hen Evan Reed's first-half goal helped the University of Delaware men's soccer team to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Drexel University in a Colonial Athletic Association match Wednesday night at DU's Vidas Field.
Tonight's tie was the second for Delaware (3-8-4, 1-2-3 CAA) in as many matches and fourth on the season while it was the first overtime match Drexel (9-3-2, 5-1-1 CAA) this year.
“Great result tonight for us and on the road against another ranked team and CAA leader,” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy said. “Despite losing our two central defenders and captains early in the game, we held strong against a very good Drexel team.”
At the 35:57 minute mark of the first half, Delaware's Evan Reed tallied his first goal of the season off of a corner kick with a helpful assist by Prince Nartey from five yards away as the Blue Hens seized a 1-0 lead.
The Dragons knotted the game at the 78-minute mark of the match when DU's Nathan Page smashed a low line-drive shot from 15 yards away that tied the match at 1-1. Fabio Machado facilitated the goal and was credited with an assist on the play.
Delaware and Drexel battled for 20 minutes through two overtime periods, where the Blue Hens held onto the 1-1 draw despite being out shot by the Dragon 3-0.
“The defensive spirit and commitment we showed was terrific tonight and we certainly earned this result,” Hennessy added. “Three of our last four home games are at home now, so the lads are looking for our fan support which has been strong for us down the stretch these past two years on the road to the post-season.”
Drexel hammered 21 shots in the match compared to Delaware's seven as UD goalkeeper Jay Lupas tallied three saves in the draw and DU's Tom Washam collected one save.
DU's Michele Patala and Brandon Zeller each received yellow cards during the match from officials due to their play on the field.
The Blue Hens will continue their CAA playoff push and return to the friendly confines of Delaware Mini Stadium on Sunday, October 21 at 1 p.m. as the University of Delaware hosts Hofstra University in a CAA match.
