NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team lost to Hofstra University, 3-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association match on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Delaware Mini Stadium.
Delaware (3-9-4, 1-3-3 CAA) continue to be winless at home with a 0-3-2 record at Delaware Mini Stadium while Hofstra reaches double-digits in wins on the season with a 10-4-1 record and 4-3 mark in the conference.
“Give Hofstra credit they had six shots on goal and scored on three of them,” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy remarked about Sunday's match. “It has been difficult for us to score goals this season and we have had plenty of opportunities to but, to win in this conference you need to be able to put the ball in the net.”
The Blue Hens had offensive chances throughout the day as UD out shot Hofstra 16-6, that included 11 shots in the second half of the match.
The Pride scored its first goal in the 12th minute of the match when Mike Annarumma took a rebound past Delaware goalkeeper Jay Lupas that resulted in Annarumma shooting into an open net for his second goal of the season.
Maid Memic tallied his seventh goal of the season from a touch pass by Chris Griebsch hammered the one-timer into the lower right side of the goal that gave the Pride a 2-0 lead at the 69:05 mark of the second half.
In the 80th minute of the match, Hofstra's Joseph Holland tallied his sixth goal of the season after he ran through the Blue Hens defense on a breakaway on the left side of the field and capitalized with a shot into the lower left corner of Delaware's goal.
Hofstra's Holland received a yellow card from the officials in the 44th minute of the first half due to his play on the field.
“Our fait is in our own hands for the postseason this year,” Hennessy explained. “If we win two of these three last matches against George Mason, William & Mary and UNCW we will get into the tournament.”
The Blue Hens return to CAA action on Wednesday, October 24 at 7 p.m. when Delaware hosts George Mason University at Delaware Mini Stadium.
