Delaware (4-10-1, 1-4-3 CAA) are in ninth place, despite being only six points out of the final spot in the CAA Tournament with two games to play, while William & Mary sits in 10th place with a 3-10-3 record and 1-5-2 in the conference.
“I can't give enough credit and praise to the men for still being in the chase this late in the season, despite the hurdles they have faced,” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy said. “I am their biggest fan at this moment.”
Since 1997, Delaware and William & Mary have played 15 matches with the Blue Hens owning a 2-12-1 record against the Tribe that included a 2-0 win last season at Delaware Mini Stadium.
The Blue Hens look to return to the win column after a 2-0 loss to George Mason on Wednesday. UD owns a 2-5-2 road record this season, and are looking for their first win in the month of October (0-4-3). Junior Mark Garrity and freshman Joe Dipre lead the team with three goals apiece. Junior Kyle Nuel paces the Blue Hens with three assists while junior Roberto Gimenez is the only player with multiple goals and assists with two apiece.
William & Mary is led by seventh-year head coach Chris Norris, who has 21 lettermen and eight starters returning from a team that went 10-9 overall and 7-4 in the CAA last season. Ben Anderson leads the team with eight points and four assists this season. Marcus Luster has scored the most goals this year with three. Goalkeepr Bennett Jones has produced a 1.47 GAA with a .740 save percentage to go with two shutouts. The Tribe have had difficulties at home with a 1-4-1 record.
“We are looking to be the only school in the CAA to reach the postseason three years running,” Hennessy added about the Blue Hens success in the conference.
Due to the weather developments with Hurricane Sandy, Delaware men's soccer's CAA home finale against UNCW has now been moved to Wednesday, October 31 at 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini Stadium.
