WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A pair of second-half goals by host William & Mary handed the University of Delaware men's soccer team a 3-2 defeat in a Colonial Athletic Association match on a cloudy and windy Saturday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
“We had a great start tonight and did well to earn a two-goal lead,” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy said. “But give full credit to the Tribe for staying the course with us and fighting back to win.”
With the loss, defending CAA champion Delaware (3-11-4, 1-5-3 CAA) was eliminated from CAA Tournament contention.
William & Mary improved to a 4-10-3 record and a 2-5-2 mark in the conference. The game marked the final road match for the Blue Hens this season as UD ended the year 3-7-2 away from Delaware Mini-Stadium.
“I think the lads left everything out there and I couldn't ask more effort,” Hennessy added. “I know they are disappointed to not go back to the post-season for a third straight year.”
The Blue Hens struck first with a header goal by captain Tobias Muller, who had a helpful assist from junior Roberto Gimenez, for his first goal of the season at the 5:57 mark of the first half.
Delaware claimed a 2-0 lead at the 18-minute mark of the first half after Vincent Mediate created a turnover and tallied his second goal of the season into the upper right corner of William & Mary's goal.
William & Mary cut the deficit in half to 2-1 with just 5:06 left in the opening half when Jackson Eskay scored his first goal of the match into the left corner of UD's goal from an assist by Chris Dunn.
Off of a free kick hammered by W&M's Chris Perez, Eskay's header gave him his second goal of the game and knotted the score at 2-2 just 14 minutes into the second stanza.
Will Smith tallied the game-winner and his second goal of the season at the 75:35 mark after he headed the ball into Delaware's goal off a corner kick supplied by Ben Anderson.
Delaware will complete its 2012 schedule with a CAA home match against UNCW on Wednesday, October 31 at 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, but was changed due to the weather concerns from Hurricane Sandy.
