NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team had opportunities to knock off the No. 11 ranked team in the country, but Old Dominion University left Newark with a 0-0 double-overtime tie in a Colonial Athletic Association match on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Delaware Mini Stadium.
The tie snaps a one-game losing streak for Delaware (3-7-2, 1-1-1 CAA) while Old Dominion's record becomes 7-1-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the CAA.
“I thought it was a fabulous game,” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy said about his squad's 0-0 double-overtime tie against Old Dominion. “They are the No. 11 team in the nation and made it a difficult game for us.”
The Monarchs, who were ranked first in the CAA preseason poll and earned a road victory over No. 2 Creighton University in September, were held in check by Delaware's defensive quartet of junior John Dinnen, sophomore Ignacio Martin, sophomore Tobias Muller and sophomore Kyle Nuel.
“I thought at the start they came out very good and earned that 11 ranking if you will and we road the storm in the first half,” Hennessy added. “The second half we really adjusted well and focused on the simple things like getting each pass right, something we weren't doing in the first half.””
The Blue Hens and Monarchs had many offensive chances during the first 90 minutes of play. Delaware junior forward Roberto Gimenez and sophomore Prince Nartey each had three shots on goal. ODU's Yannick Smith and Tim Hopkinson each led the Monarch with two shots on goal apiece.
Through regulation the Blue Hens out shot the Monarchs, 15-9, which included 10 shots by UD in the second half.
Over the two overtime periods, both teams had offensive chances as the Monarchs tallied three shots on goal compared to the Blue Hens two.
“The shots and the stats are a good indicator of where we are and a great achievement for our men to tie the 11th-ranked team in the country,” Hennessy remarked.
Delaware goalkeeper Jay Lupas kept the ball out of the net for the Blue Hens as the sophomore stopped all six shots he faced.
Pre-season All-CAA selection, Old Dominion goalkeeper Victor Francoz, stopped all nine shots Blue Hens shots on goal.
The Blue Hens had two yellow cards issued to them by the officials with Dineen receiving one at the 39-minute mark of the first half and another was handed at at the 106th minute to Muller.
The Blue Hens return to the field on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. as the Blue Hens travel to Boston, Mass. to tackle the Northeastern University Huskies at NU's Parsons Field.
