11/19/2012 3:06:00 PM | Volleyball
NEWARK, Del. -- Chelsea Lawrence, who led the University of Delaware volleyball team to a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship game before heart-wrenching setback in the finals, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending Nov. 19.
Lawrence, a senior middle hitter from Evanston, Ill. (Evanston Township HS), earned All-Tournament honors as the No. 2 seed Blue Hens knocked off No. 6 James Madison 3-1 in the CAA Tournament semifinals at Towson (Md.) University before dropping a tough 3-2 decision to rival Hofstra in the championship game.
The Blue Hens, the two-time defending CAA Tournament champions, ended the season with a record of 16-14 after winning 8 of their final 10 games.
Lawrence, a honor student majoring in psychology with a minor in women's studies at Delaware, registered eight kills to go with three digs and two block assists in the semifinal win over James Madison and then recorded a team-high 15 kills and six block assists in the championship match setback to Hofstra.
Delaware had taken a 2-1 lead after downing Hofstra 25-18 in the first set and 25-12 in the third set. But the Pride rallied and evened the match with a hard-fought 25-23 victory in the fourth set before clinching the win and the NCAA Tournament berth with a 15-12 win in the deciding fifth set.
Lawrence, who earned second team All-CAA honors during the season, finished the season with 240 kills (2.24 per set) and led all Blue Hen hitters with a .259 hitting percentage. She also registered 67 digs and led the team with 99 blocks (0.93 per set).
