NEWARK, Del. – Kyle Bruno's second goal of the season provided the offensive punch as the University of Delaware men's soccer team defeated UNCW, 1-0, in the final Colonial Athletic Association match of the season Friday night at Delaware Mini- Stadium.
Prior to the victory in the season finale, Delaware honored its three senior players - Eyal Gruber, Brandon Paul, and Ben Raymond - in a pre-game ceremony.
“We are delighted by tonight's victory,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy, whose squad missed out on the CAA Tournament after advancing the last two seasons, including capturing the 2011 title. “To send the seniors off with a win is always a nice way to end the season”
Delaware (4-11-4, 2-5-3 CAA) completes its 2012 campaign with the triumph and earned its first win of the season at home while UNCW fell to 7-10-1 record and 4-6 mark in the CAA. Despite the loss, UNCW claimed the sixth seed in the upcoming CAA Men's Soccer Championships that is set to begin on November 5.
“I thought we had some great opportunities and capitalized,” added Hennessy. “It was important to set a tradition of winning at home and to use it as a stepping stone for next season.”
At the 35-minute mark of the first half, a breakaway sparked by Delaware's Vincent Mediate was continued through the UNCW defense by Joe Dipre and completed when Bruno's one-time shot into an empty net gave the Blue Hens a 1-0 advantage. Dipre registered his second assist of the season on the play while Bruno recorded his second goal of the season.
Making just his second start of the season, Blue Hen goalkeeper Paul DeFeo made three saves en route to his first career shutout.
UNCW collected 13 shots compared to Delaware's 12 as Seahawks goalkeeper Sam Williams made five saves in the loss.
