Athlete of the Week: Jaquetta May (Women's Basketball)
12/10/2012 9:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. -- Jaquetta May, who led the University of Delaware women's basketball squad to a pair of big non-conference victories last week, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending Dec. 10.
May, a senior guard from Wilmington, Del. (Delcastle High School) and a human services major, played a key role in both victories as the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Blue Hens went on the road to defeat Rhode Island 57-40 on Wednesday and returned home to post a 59-58last-second win over two-time defending Ivy League champion Princeton on Sunday before a crowd of 4,029 at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens improved to 5-2 and ran their win streak to four games heading into a 10-day break for final exams. Delaware will return to action Dec. 20 when the Hens host No. 10 ranked University of Maryland at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter. Delaware will be looking to avenge its only loss of the regular season a year ago when the team went 31-2 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
May was outstanding in both games last week, shooting 5 of 9 from the field for 10 points and adding three rebounds and three blocked shots in the win over Rhode Island and tying for the team lead with 15 points to go with five rebounds in the win over Princeton.
For the season, May has played in all seven games with four starts and is averaging 7.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while leading the team with seven blocked shots. She is also shooting 50 percent from the field, having knocked down 20 of 40 field goal attempts.
