NEWARK, Del. – All-American Elena Delle Donne of the 12th ranked University of Delaware women's basketball team has been named a contender for several 2012 Player of the Year Midseason Watch Lists in accordance with her outstanding performance throughout the season.
Among the midseason recognitions are spots on the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Women's National Player of the Year Watch List, the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Watch List, and the State Farm Wade Award Watch List.
Members of the USBWA's board of directors chose 20 players to be included on the list as contenders for the trophy, which will be presented to the national player of the year in Denver at the USBWA's Women's College Basketball Awards Breakfast on April 3.
The acclaimed Wade Watch list, from which The State Farm Wade Trophy recipient is chosen, consists of players selected on the basis of game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team, and overall playing ability. The State Farm Wade Watch list will be trimmed to 12 finalists in mid-March. State Farm and the Wade Trophy Coalition will officially announce the State Farm Wade Trophy winner during the WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in Denver.
The annual Wooden Award Gala will take place on Friday, April 6, 2012, and will honor winners, All Americans and the Legends of Coaching winner Geno Auriemma of Connecticut.
Delle Donne, the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year and an Associated Press Preseason All-American, currently leads all NCAA Division I players in scoring, averaging 28.0 points. She also ranks fourth in the nation with a 90.8 free throw percentage, and leads the Blue Hens with 10.3 rebounds per game and 58 blocked shots on the season.
The 6-foot-5 junior scored a season-high 41 points in the Hens' victory over CAA foe Hofstra on Jan. 5. She holds 12 of the 13 highest individual scoring games in school history and became the fastest player in CAA and Delaware history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, doing so in just her 38th career game.
Delle Donne, the lone CAA contender for the USBWA and State Farm Wade Watch Lists, is joined by Shante Evans of Hofstra among those selected to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Watch List.
Delaware (21-1, 12-0) looks to remain unbeaten in conference action as the Blue Hens head to Georgia State (7-16, 1-11) on Sunday at the Georgia State Sports Arena for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
