NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's tennis squad returned home to the Delaware Field House Courts for the first time since the fall season on Monday but dropped a 5-2 decision to Temple in non-league action.
The Blue Hens (3-2) got victories from Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom and Kimberly Milla in singles action but Temple (5-7) picked up the win after capturing four singles matches and winning the doubles point by sweeping the three contests.
Sjoberg-Sundstrom (at right) improved to 9-8 in singles play this season as she defeated Agnese Rozite 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 at the No. 4 singles spot while teammate Kimberly Milla won at the No. 6 position, downing Carly Bohman by a rallying from one set down to win 6-7, 6-4, 10-6. Milia improved to 7-5 with the victory.
Temple won the other four singles matches with Yana Mavrina downing Delaware's Dorothy Safron at No. 1, Alicia Doms defeating Samantha Carnall in three sets at No. 2, Jordan Batey downing Courtney Fenimore at No. 3, and Maame Osei getting past Olivia Heim at the No. 4 spot.
All three doubles matches were competitive but the Owls prevailed in all three, including an 8-6 win by Rozite and Mavrina over Sjoberg-Sundstrom and Fenimore at the No. 2 position.
Delaware will return to action this weekend when the Blue Hens host Colonial Athletic Association rival Hofstra Sunday, March 18, at 11 a.m. at the DFH Courts.
