NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams picked up a pair of victories Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens shutout Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association opener at the Delaware Field House Courts.
The men reached the .500 mark, improving to 3-3 on the season as the Blue Hens defeated Hofstra 6-1 for their first conference victory of the season. Delaware captured all but one singles match and picked up the doubles point with three wins. Hofstra men fell to 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in CAA action.
On the women's side, Delaware (4-2) won all six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches to hand Hofstra (4-8, 1-3 CAA) its fifth loss in six outings.
In the men's match, Delaware got straight set wins in singles play from Troy Beneck (at right), Nolan Gelman, Ryan Kent, and Ryhaan Gill. Adam Lawton came back from a 1-0 deficit to win his singles match over Hofstra's Antonio Pena.
Picking up singles victories in straight sets for the women were Dorothy Safron (at left) at No. 2, Courtney Fenimore at No. 3, Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom at No. 4, Olivia Helm at No. 5, and Amanda Halstrom at No. 6. Samantha Carnall came back in a gutsy effort after going down 1-0 against Hofstra's Elena Ivanova to notch the point.
Delaware's double teams of Carnall-Sjoberg-Sundstrom, Safron-Fenimore, and Milla-Harrington were also victorious over the Pride.
The Blue Hens tennis squads will look to keep rolling as they return to non-league action next week. The men's netters remain home to take on Temple on March 20 for a 2 p.m. match, while the women will host Lafayette on March 22 for a 3 p.m. match.
