University of Delaware Netters Sweep Lafayette With Pair of 7-0 Shutout Victories

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams picked up a pair of shutout victories Thursday at the Delaware Field House Courts as both teams posted 7-0 victories over Lafayette in non-league action.
The Delaware men (4-4) reached .500 on the season as they captured all six singles matches in straight sets and picked up the doubles point with two wins. Lafayette fell to 2-5 on the year.
The Blue Hen women earned their second straight 7-0 victory and improved to 5-2 on the season. Delaware won all six singles matches in straight sets and earned the doubles point thanks to three easy victories.
In the men's match, Delaware won five singles matches in straight sets and received a gutsy comeback performance from Jason Derene, who came back from a one-game deficit against Lafayette's Scott Gelbman (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) to take the point.
Delaware earned the doubles point behind wins from Beneck and Lawton at No. 1, and Gelman and Evan Andrews at No. 3.
On the women's side, Samantha Carnall, Courtney Fenimore, Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom, and Kimberly Miller swept their matches 6-0, 6-0, while Dorothy Safron earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot and Christina Harrington earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.
The Delaware doubles teams of Carnall and Sjoberg-Sundstrom, Safron and Fenimore, and Heim and Halstrom also were winners.
Both teams will return to Colonial Athletic Association action at VCU on March 24. The men take on the Rams at 11 a.m. while the women will face VCU at 2 p.m.
