The Delaware women (10-4, 4-2) swept the top four singles flights and all three doubles matches to win their fourth straight victor. George Mason fell to 10-9 (0-6 CAA).
"We had overall strong performances, especially from the seniors in their last regular season match," said Delaware head coach Laura Travis. "We are looking forward to the CAA championships."
Samantha Carnall earned her fourth straight singles victory at the top flight, winning the first set 6-1, before George Mason's Brooke Blackwell retired during the second set, 1-0. Dorothy Safron followed at No. 2 with her fourth straight singles victory in a gutsy comeback performance over Ashley Delaney. After falling 2-6 in the first set, Safron came back to win the second set, 6-0, and the subsequent tiebreaker, 6-1.
At No. 3, Courtney Fenimore got her fifth consecutive singles victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Liza Davis. Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (at right) rounded out the singles points with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sara Novakovic.
In doubles, the top two positions came from 2-5 deficits to win. The Carnall and Sjoberg-Sundstrom partnership battled to the tiebreaker for an 8-7 (7-5) victory over Blackwell and Delaney at the top spot. At No. 2, Fenimore and Safron edged Davis and Novakovic, 8-6. Olivia Heim and Amanda Halstrom finished off the doubles sweep for Delaware as the duo cruised by Ekaterina Desiatnikova and Andrea Londen, 8-2.
The Delaware men (7-8, 2-4) earned two singles victories and one doubles win but it would not be enough as George Mason (16-7, 3-2) overcame the Blue Hens.
"It was a long, close match with three three set matches and four tiebreak sets," stated Travis. "Mason outplayed us when it counted. But we battled hard and are looking forward to the CAA championships next week."
Troy Beneck earned a singles victory at the top flight over George Mason's Jordan Dyke. After dropping his first set, 4-6, Beneck battled to even the score with a 6-3 victory in the second set. Beneck stayed strong in the tiebreaker, winning 6-4 to capture the singles point for the Blue Hens.
Ryan Kent (top left) picked up the other point for Delaware at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Taylor Sargent in singles play.
In doubles action, the duo of Kent and Andre Vorobyov defeated Scott Keaton and Joseph Wiggins, 8-7 (6) at the No. 2 position, but George Mason captured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
Both Blue Hens teams will now await their seeding for the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament this weekend at Old Dominion. Delaware will begin tournament play either Thursday or Friday depending on their seeds, which will be announced Monday.
