Blue Hens Shut Down Hofstra 4-0 to Reach CAA Tennis Quarterfinals

NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team swept Hofstra 4-0 Thursday afternoon to advance to its 11th straight Colonial Athletic Association tournament quarterfinals.
Delaware (11-4), which came into the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan Tournament as the No. 7 seed, advances to the quarterfinals to face third-seeded UNCW (14-6) at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Old Dominion University's Folkes-Stevens Center Tennis Courts.
The Hens have now won five straight matches since falling to UNCW 6-1 back on Apr. 1 in a match that was also played at Old Dominion.
The Blue Hens swept singles action with three victories and picked up two wins in doubles play to shut out Hofstra (6-14 overall) for the second time this season. The Blue Hens posted a 7-0 victory when the two teams met during the regular season in Newark, Del.
In doubles action, the Blue Hen duo of Samantha Carnall and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom defeated Hofstra's Elena Ivanova and Brooke Salier at the top flight with a score of 8-4.
Olivia Heim and Kimberly Milla finished off the doubles point for the Hens with an 8-3 win over Paige Polizos and Malissa Gilanchi at the No. 3 position.
Three different Blue Hens went undefeated in singles play to complete the sweep. At No. 2, Dorothy Safron earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hofstra's Sonie Tsay.
Courtney Fenimore (at right) followed at No. 3 as she won a season-high sixth straight singles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 shut out over Malissa Gilanchi. Sjoberg-Sundstrom was the third Blue Hen to earn a singles point with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bianca Derrick at the No. 4 spot.
