Delaware Women Rowers Post Three Top Five Finishes at Occoquan Sprints; Novice Eights Posts Runner-Up Finish

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team collected three top five finishes, highlighted by a runner-up showing in the finals by the Novice Eights crew, at the 2012 Occoquan Sprints Sunday on the Occoquan River.
Delaware's boat in the Novice Eights event, consisting of coxswain Jamie Noce, Denise Cirelli, Jenn Majcher, Yardley Markee, Sarah Drobnock, Mackenzie Chrisco, Corey Holloway, Kate Flood, and Lily Guttentag won the morning heat in a time of 7:13.2. The win advanced the crew to the afternoon's grand final where the Hens recorded second place finish with a time of 7:18.22. Winning the event was Bucknell University with a time of 7:10.5.
The crew of coxswain Dianna Levin, Laura Wertman, Meredith Murphy, Jenny Kohler, Jamie Hedrick, Angela Quinn, Tori Drach, Kristen Endres, and Sarah Slotoroff finished third in the first heat of the Second Varsity Eight event with a time of 7:23.68, advancing to the grand finals. The Hens took third in the grand finals, posting a time of 7:14.87. The crew was able to avenge an earlier morning defeat by finishing ahead of fifth place George Mason. Navy won the event with a time of 7:03.5 with second place Old Dominion finishing in 7:11.86.
The UD Varsity Eights, with coxswain Hillary Levitz, Julia Cagney, Rachel Conway, Holly Dodge, Lauren Kolsky, Lauren Kanaskie, Calla Cissel, Virginia Hall, and Alex Smart leading the way, also advanced to the grand finals. The Hens crossed the line in 6:52.64, taking second behind eventual winner Navy. In the final, Delaware finished fifth with a time of 6:58.4.
In the Novice Fours event, the crew of coxswain Hayley Diverio, Sydney Gayda, Catherine Manner, Christy Bugher, and Shannon Bell, won their morning flight with a time of 8:04.2. The Hens absolutely dominated the field, with second place Loyola (Md.) finishing with a time of 8:22.08 to finish a distant second. Delaware's time was also the fastest of the entire event.
In the Varsity Fours competition, Delaware's team of coxswain Anna Sung, Bethany Callaway, Bethany Porter, and Rachel Boudart placed second in its semifinals with a time of 7:40.13, trailing the winner North Carolina by less than a second. The Hens finished ahead of Navy, George Mason, and Washington College.
The Blue Hens will return to action Friday, April 6, against Villanova on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
