NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware women's basketball head coach Tina Martin has announced that forward Joy Caracciolo has transferred from Boston College and will join the Blue Hens this fall.
Caracciolo (at right), a 6-2 forward from Bristow, Va. (Stonewall Jackson HS) who played in 30 games as a freshman last season at Boston College, will be enrolled at UD this fall and will practice with the Blue Hens beginning in October.
Per NCAA transfer rules, she will not be eligible to compete during the 2012-13 season but will have three years of eligibility beginning with the 2013-14 campaign.
“We are thrilled to have Joy join our program - she is a great addition,” said Martin, the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year who led the Blue Hens to the second round of the NCAA Tournament this past season. “She is a versatile forward who can score the basketball and rebound. The thing we love about Joy is that she has a scorer's mentality. She will be a big asset to our team, especially on the offensive end.”
Caracciolo played in 30 games and started nine last season at Boston College for head coach Sylvia Crawley as the Eagles went 7-23 as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. She averaged 17.6 minutes per game and contributed 143 points (4.8 per game) and 89 rebounds (3.0 per game) while ranking second on the team with a 43.4 field goal percentage.
She scored in double figures five times during the season with a season-high 13 points vs. Saint Joseph's Dec. 29 and just missed her first double-double with a 10-point, 9-rebound effort against Massachusetts on Dec. 7. She also had 11 points vs. Wake Forest and 10 each against nationally-ranked Maryland and Miami (Fla.).
While at Stonewall Jackson High School, Caracciolo averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 blocked shots per game as a senior for head coach Nsonji White.
She was a McDonald All-American nominee, earned first team All-State, All-Metro, all-district, and all-region honors as a senior, and was also an All-State honorable mention pick as a junior.
She was also a two-time All-State performer in track & field and placed second in the shot put at the state meet as a senior. She also competed in swimming as a youth and was a member of her high school chorus.
Caracciolo joins a Blue Hens team that returns all five starters from last year's squad that was the best in school history. Led by All-American and national scoring leader Elena Delle Donne, the Blue Hens went 31-2, were ranked as high as No. 7 nationally, posted an undefeated record in league play on the way to winning its first CAA Tournament title, and defeated UALR in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Kansas in the second round.
