Freshmen Lead the Way as University of Delaware Volleyball Posts First Win of Season vs. Lehigh

The victory came in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament hosted by the University of Virginia at Memorial Gymnasium. Delaware (1-2) will continue action at the tournament on Saturday when the Hens take on Western Kentucky at 11 a.m. and the host Cavaliers at 7 p.m.
Like Delaware, Western Kentucky advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
Blue Hen freshman Katie Hillman contributed 16 kills, six blocks, and 19 points, Mackenzie Olsen dished out a season-high 43 assists and added seven digs, and Ariel Shonk recorded 30 digs as the Blue Hens knocked off the Engineers (1-1) to post the team's first win of the season.
All four sets of the match were decided by four points or less. The Hens opened with a 25-21 victory in the first set before Lehigh came back with an identical 25-21 win of their own. But Delaware then put the match away as they knocked off the Mountain Hawks by scores of 25-22 and 25-21 for the 3-1 win.
Delaware received a balanced attack at senior Alissa Alker (at right) added 11 kills and 16 digs and Katy Hank chipped in with 11 kills and four digs. Chandler Bryant and Chelsea Lawrence knocked down six and five blocks respectively as the Hens recorded a season-high 23 blocks assists and 11.5 total blocks.
Courney McCutchan and Kaylynn Genemaras each had nine kills, Ana Vrhel chipped in with eight kills, Amy Matula had 18 assists and 17 digs, and Rachel Charles added 20 digs to pace Lehigh.
