Delaware Volleyball Drops Final Two Matches of Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament at Virginia

The Blue Hens (1-4), who posted their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Lehigh in the first day of the tournament Friday, fell to Western Kentucky by scores of 25-17, 25-18, and 25-21 and dropped a 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 decision to the Cavaliers.
Delaware senior Chelsea Lawrence (at right) was named to the All-Tournament team after registering 21 kills and 10 blocks over the three matches. She was joined on the team by Most Valuable Player Heather Boyan of Western Kentucky, Ashley Potts and Paige Wessel of Western Kentucky, Jess O'Shoney and Emily Rottman of Virginia, and Rachel Chares of Lehigh.
The Blue Hens will return to action next weekend when they host the annual Delaware Invitational at their new home - the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware will play host to Texas A&M, Xavier, and Columbia in the two-day event, which begins Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. and continues with the final match on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. Great tickets are still available by calling 302-831-2257 or by going online to www.bluehens.com/tickets. Lawrence led the Hens vs. Western Kentucky (4-2) with eight kills and two blocks while Alissa Alker had seven kills and six digs, Logan Sebastian chipped in with six kills, and Mackenzie Olsen recorded 26 assists. Despite the 3-0 loss, the first set featured 13 ties before the Hilltoppers pulled away. Like Delaware, Western Kentucky advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Heather Boyan and Paige Wessel each had 12 kills for Western Kentucky.
In the final match of the tournament, the Hens fell to Virginia by a 3-0 score despite nine kills from Sebastian, seven from Alker, and six from Katie Hillman. Olsen added 28 assists while Ariel Shonk contributed 16 digs, and Hillman and Lawrence each added three blocks. Kayla Sears led the Cavaliers with 12 kills.
