On the heels of a runner-up finish at the University of Pittsburgh/Nike Invitational, Delaware (1-4) looks to win its third match in the last four years against the U.S. Naval Academy (1-2) after a 5-3 victory last season. Since 1942, Delaware and Navy have played in 16 matches, with the Blue Hens owning a 6-8-2 record.
“We always look forward to playing Navy,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “The games themselves are always competitive and played in the best spirit of collegiate sports.”
Members of the Patriot League and led by fourth-year head coach Dave Brandt, Navy has 17 lettermen that includes nine starters returning from a squad that posted a 7-7-5 record during the 2011 season. Navy has its leading scorer returning in senior David Jackson, who produced six goals and two assists a year ago.
Three Delaware players, John Dineen, Vincent Mediate and Prince Nartey, look to springboard their All-Tournament selection from the University of Pittsburgh/Nike Invitational into extensive production for the Blue Hens through the remainder of the 2012 campaign. Joe Dipre, Mediate and Evan Reed each have one goal to lead the team through the first five games of the season.
The Blue Hens will play seven home matches this season that include five against CAA competition.
On Saturday, September 16, at 7 p.m., the Blue Hens will travel to New York City to tackle the Columbia University Lions. Delaware will return home on Tuesday, September 18 at 7 p.m. with a match against Seton Hall University at Delaware Mini Stadium
